110530 From A Young Confucian Student To The Successor Of A Conglomerate, Park Yoochun Has Returned

Park Yoochun has returned.

When Park Yoochun made his acting debut through the drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, he was chosen as the idol-turned-actor with the most talent and success and made many disregard the stereotypes placed on him.

Park Yoochun played the role of the handsome, wealthy and smart yet haggard Lee Seon Joon and surprised many with his natural vocalization, despite the fact that it was a historical drama, and his on-screen chemistry with his fellow actors. Being one of the major factors in the success of the drama, Park Yoochun was given the honor of receiving the Best Male Newcomer Award at the recently held ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’.

His second challenge is MBC’s new Monday-Tuesday drama ‘Miss Ripley’. The production is a typical melodrama that centers around a woman whose lies snowball and tangle her in her own web of never-ending lies. Compared to the light nature of his previous drama, which revolved around the love and dreams of youths, ‘Miss Ripley’ deals with quite a heavy theme that requires subtle and delicate expressions of emotions.
Park Yoochun plays the role of Song Yoo Hyun, the perfect Prince Charming of our generation. With a warm heart and a kind spirit, Song Yoo Hyun believes that Jang Miri truly loves him, when she is only using him for her own success, and ends up falling into a state of distress and despair.

One could say that his character differs completely from the haggard image of most conglomerate successors in the drama industry these days. His new character is also completely different from Lee Seon Joon of ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’. This might make it harder for Park Yoochun to fall into his character. He has been given the responsibility to create a whole new image for conglomerate successors.

In the recent ‘Miss Ripley’ press conference, Park Yoochun confessed that he felt pressured about his role as he said, “I felt really pressured by my role,” and “I worry if I’ll be able to express the character well. I thought and worried a lot about acting even after I chose this drama as the follow-up to my first production.”
Regarding the difference between Lee Seon Joon and Song Yoo Hyun, Park Yoochun stated, “The difference lies in their methods of expressing pain. Song Yoo Hyun is a character who always starts off everything with a smile. I think he’ll be a character who is bright but has many tears.

Many are curious to see if Park Yoochun, who gained popularity, the favor of critics and awards for his role in ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, will be able to showcase improved acting skills while creating a new image for conglomerate successors in the drama industry.

110530 ‘World Tour’ JYJ, “We Are Getting Stronger As More Time Passes”

JYJ, who started their two-month long worldwide tour in Bangkok, Thailand, revealed their thoughts on their remaining two performances.

Kim Jaejoong, who acted as the director for the Asia leg of the tour, stated, “I worked hard to make it a stage where the singers’ abilities are better showcased,” and “I worked especially hard on understanding each city’s incorporated culture and tried to find a way to communicate with each location’s fans in the most effective way possible. Because the ideas in my head came true at each performance, I was happy to share moving and electrifying moments with our fans and I’m thankful to all the people who came to watch our performances.”

Kim Junsu stated, “In our US performances, we’re working with the best teams in the world, people who have choreographed for BeyoncĂ© and Christina Aguilera,” and “The best moments are when our dance team gives us thumbs-ups at the end of our performances and when the staff compliment our live skills and tell us we harmonize perfectly. As these staff members have worked with global pop stars, I feel as though their praises have more weight and meaning to them and it makes me happy because I can feel our potential through their words.

Park Yoochun said, “We are getting stronger as more time passes. I can feel that we are growing in a positive direction,” and “I feel such an overwhelming pride for our world tour, which becomes more structured and perfected as we perform more.”

JYJ will be completing the North American leg of their world tour in San Jose on June 3rd and will hold their grand finale in Busan on June 11th and 12th.

CEO Baek Chang Joo of C-JeS Entertainemnt stated, “The Busan concerts were completely sold out in 15 minutes after ticket reservations opened on Friday. For the domestic fans who have been waiting for JYJ, we have been positively considering additional encore performances.”

110531 JYJ’s LA Pre-Concert Fan Meetup Proves Group’s Success

The success and popularity of JYJ has once again proven itself, as seen in the number of fans that gathered before the group’s recent Los Angeles concert. The concert took place on Friday, May 27, and lasted from 8PM to 10PM at the Nokia Theatre.

A pre-concert fan meetup was originally planned by DBSK fansite DBSKnights, but was cancelled due to lack of space to accommodate the estimated 300+ attendees. Another DBSK fansite, fuckyeahtohoshinki, saved the meetup by moving it to Nokia Plaza. There, fans began to gather at 2PM, enthusiastically introducing themselves to each other.

As the hours passed, fans took pictures, made new friends, got hyped up for the concert, and even did flashmobs! A number of fansites also gave away bracelets, light sticks and signs for Cassies to use during the concert. A red ocean slowly formed as more fans trickled in while decked out in DBSK merchandise. By 7PM, the meetup had swelled to over 250 people.

According to the official Facebook event for JYJ’s concert, “JYJ’s concert tour will create an unimaginable experience and compelling atmosphere that fans from all over the world and of all ages can enjoy. Their fans will finally get a chance to witness JYJ’s grandeur debut in the U.S and Canada.”

Such a claim held true as fans from Hawaii, China and even England flew in to see the singers perform. Audience members ranged from teens to aunties, as well as a number of avid fanboys. Junsu’s father, JYJ’s friends John Egg, and previous MC of the JYJ showcase Shane Yoon also showed up to show their support. John Egg stopped by the meetup to take a few pictures, exciting the surprised fans.

Four aunties from four different nationalities (America, Taiwan, Japan and Korea) drew a great amount of attention as they showed off their DBSK pride. Lily, Ayumi, Christin and Lindsey had met at the Las Vegas and Los Angeles JYJ showcases, and become friends since then. They wore matching black boas to show their connection to one another.

They had discovered JYJ through websites like Youtube and Wikipedia. One of the ladies often visited a Korean drama recap site, where she discovered Yoochun’s “Sungkyunkwan Scandal.” She saw that “Yoochun and his group” was often referenced, so she googled DBSK and discovered a “huge amount of information” on them. Through Wikipedia, she read about the Mirotic lyrics controversy, which led her to YouTube, where she watched the Mirotic music video. At that point, she was sold.

When asked who their favorite member was, many replied, “Jaejoong!” with a familiar dreamy look on their face. But one aunty admitted that she liked Changmin because he is “good-looking and funny.”

Despite their older age, the women’s enthusiasm matched many of the younger fans there. Christen even confessed that she had gone to all three JYJ showcases and two JYJ concerts.

The four ladies showed their burning dedication with their message to JYJ. “Always Keep the Faith! We will fight for you. Don’t give up.”

Are you impressed by the amount of support JYJ’s fans are showing?

[Fanaccount] 110529 – 2011 MickyParty

First time joining MickyParky~~ Has always been anticipating how the content is.
After the opening, Yoochun’s mum and auntie came up (on stage) and greeted, and cute Norae too~~

Yoochun’s mum said due to Yoochun’s schedules, he always returned home with his eyes shut and then went out with his eyes shut.

This time, he lost 3kg due to filming. (Master, don’t lose weight anymore T-T ) (T/N: Writer calls Yoochun as Master. As in honourable term.)

A while ago, Yoochun was sick and Yoochun’s mum told him to go to the hospital but Yoochun is afraid of needles thus doesn’t want to go. He was later being dragged over (to hospital).
Was supposed to be hospitalised for two days but our master strongly requested to go home after one day, even said that if he was denied, he will jump down….
Afterwhich, Yoohwan said, Hyung, it’s so weird, you don’t fear the pain of tattooing so why afraid of needles.

Mentioned about how Yoochun always spent his birthday overseas but when Yoochun is back this time, Yoochun’s mum will still prepare delicious food.
Side story: When Yoochun’s mum was talking, Norae was standing straight, with the straightened body, circling Yoochun’s mum’s pants round and round~
Upon the cutting cake session, she ran across the whole stage, you does know it’s your oppa’s birthday right~~

Then it was the photos and self-cam session~~ From the past till now~
Lastly was Yoochun’s recorded video, the volume for the video was too loud but there should be fans who would be able to hear clearly, till then everyone can go and check it out~~
There’s a sentence that I clearly heard it, Master jokingly said that he knew there’s gonna be Micky Party on the 29th thus he specifically arranged for schedule in US.
When Yoochun was talking, Norae was running around, thus Master said to Norae, “Ya!”, as though scolding her, but didn’t hear it clearly~ Basically it was like this, ha~

P.S. Looking at those self-cam photos by Yoochun, the whole event was watched smiling and (I) was thinking, what a good-looking face, sometimes smiles like a kid with eyes disappearing, sometimes with a gentle look, those small actions at the concert, the sniggering, the tongue-showing, how can anyone not loving a man like this, thus we must protect and stand by our Yoochun, always loving him, and let’s anticipate next year’s MickyParty together

~~ Always Keep The Faith!

110530 JYJ discusses their growth as artists through their world tour

With just two more stops to go in their two month-long world tour, JYJ recently sat down with Star Today to reflect on their tour thus far.

Jaejoong, who’s also the director for their Asian tour, began, “I aimed to create a stage that allowed artists to express their full potential. I paid special attention to understanding the culture of every city we were performing in and to converse more directly with our fans there. It was extremely heartwarming to see my thoughts come alive at every concert through our fans, and it’s definitely a thrilling experience. I’m thankful for everyone who came to see us.”

Junsu continued, “Bravo! I love it when the crowd shouts that. We’re with the best choreography teams for our American stops. They’ve worked with stars like Beyonce and Christina Aguilera, so the happiest moment for me is when they gave us a thumbs up and when staff members praised our live’s harmony. Because our staff members have worked with world pop stars, I do weigh their opinions more heavily. I’m glad that they feel our potential.”

Yoochun added, “The more time passes, the stronger we’re getting. I can feel that we’re growing and moving towards a better direction. With every new concert that we complete, things start to come together and the level of perfection gets higher. This world tour makes my heart swell with pride.”

Jaejoong finally concluded, “The tracks that we composed for our world tour are receiving a lot of love, which makes me proud. We hope to grow as artists that continue to make great tracks under the name of JYJ, and hope to meet more fans across the globe.”

JYJ will be concluding their American tour in San Jose on June 3rd before concluding the tour altogether in Busan on the 11th and 12th.

110528 Ripley’s Park Yoochun : “My Character In The Drama Hides His Pain, Like I Do” – A Meaningful Remark

In “Miss Ripley,” Park Yoochun participates in an appointment ceremony to become the youngest Director, exuding a warm charisma.

In the new MBC drama “Miss Ripley” that starts airing on 30 May, Park Yoochun uses a warm, endearing smile and persuasive leadership skills to express the style of the second generation conglomerate Director.

In “Miss Ripley,” Park Yoochun’s character Song Yoo Hyun possesses good looks, a slender figure, rich family, extraordinary capabilities, a kind heart and other qualities, all put together into a “perfect man”. Song Yoo Hyun is the heir to “Mondo Resorts,” which owns resorts all over the world, and is introduced as the “youngest director,” showing his extraordinary skills.

In the ceremony to appoint Song Yoo Hyun as Director, his thoughtful manner of speech and naturally polite manner earns him the respect of others, exuding a “gentle charisma.” Instead of the cool charisma that intimidates others, Song Yoo Hyun’s power comes from not letting his true abilities show, but instead showing a controlled charisma through his eyes and actions, a Director with a different style of power.

It is said that in every scene, Park Yoochun exudes charisma with a warm and friendly smile, and is perfectly immersed in the character Song Yoo Hyun. According to an insider, when director Choi Yee Seob met Park Yoochun for the first time, he discovered (Yoochun’s) unique smile that brightens the day, and adorable manner of speaking and thought to himself, “this is really similar to the character of Song Yoo Hyun,” with great anticipation.

Also, with regards the role of Song Yoo Hyun which he was going to play, Park Yoochun said, “Song Yoo Hyun and I share many similarities. For example, instead of expressing his emotions, he often hides it in his heart. Also, he is always smiling even though he is hurting inside,  which is similar to me,” and “this is why I’m always afraid that I will use my own (Park Yoochun) manner of speech instead while filming.”

The production company said, “Park Yoochun’s image suits the role of the “perfect man” Song Yoo Hyun who possesses good looks, ability, character and more,”  “Park Yoochun managed to naturally express the “charisma of controlled emotions hidden beneath a smile,” please look forward to it.”

[Fanaccount] 110527 Junsu at the hotel in LA+sig&hug (A bit of JJ too)

So I was really determined to see JYJ at their hotel before the concert since I had missed my chance during the showcase in November. Plus it would be my last chance since idk when they’ll come back again. It’s so hard to find out where they are since fans don’t usually announce it to everyone, which is understandable though. LUCKILY on Wednesday someone told me on twitter that JYJ were spotted at the JW Marriott. Even though I wasn’t 100% positive it was the hotel, since I hadn’t heard it from an actual fan who saw, I decided to go anyways and really hoped it was true!

Alright, so I had arrived a little before 6am at the hotel alone. I know, really early XD But my only ride was for my dad to drop be off before work since he works in LA anyways. Of course it was pretty empty at that time, so I found a seat with a good view of the guest room elevators^^

And so the waiting began~ Btw, the hotel staff never said anything to me. I was surprised cuz I sat there pretty much the whole day LOL. Alright so 3-4 hours went by, I was so hungry cuz all I had for breakfast was a granola bar ToT But I DID NOT want to take my eyes off the elevator! I tweeted and texted ppl a bit, that passed just a little time haha. I wished there was free wifi cuz that would have occupied me more, but I had my music :D I had also prepared in my mind what I wanted to say in Japanese since I knew a little. Around this time I was starting to think maybe it wasn’t the hotel cuz I felt like I had been waiting forever already (9am was still pretty early though lol). I was still hoping really bad though!

BUT THEN!!!

At 10am, two people came from the elevators. First thing I noticed was the light brown hair! Then I realized it was JUNSU!!! OMG IT’S REALLY JUNSU!! MY HEART WAS BEATING SO FAST! I immediately threw my stuff in my bag and quickly went over to Junsu! I was like “Omg Junsu!” and he smiled happily and said “Hi!” :D I wish you guys could have seen that! He was SO CUTE! I saw his eyes through his glasses! I had EYE CONTACT. I was about to get out my “The Beginning” album I brought but realized I left it at the table! DDD: So I thought Okay, I should just ask for a hug right now! So I said “Junsu, can I get a hug?” But of course he didn’t understand me. He was ADORABLY CONFUSED and just smiled. They continued walking towards the small cafe-like place in the hotel and I went back to my table to pick up my album. Omg I was shaking of excitement! I saw Junsu and the guy waiting in line and I went over to wait right outside of it. THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS WAS THAT I WAS THE ONLY FAN THERE AT THIS TIME!

Junsu was just playing or something on his iPad. I waited until he wasn’t busy to ask for his autograph. I was kinda hiding too cuz I didn’t want him to see me cuz I’ll feel like a creep…maybe I am? LOL. So he finally sat down while the guy ordered their coffee and stuff and he was still on his iPad.

So I went up to him and asked “Junsu, can you sign please?” and handed over my album. He smiled and took it and started to sign it. He asked “What’s your name?” but I didn’t understand him at first, not cuz of his English but cuz I was busy trying to get my camera out to record it. So I was like “Oh! My name? It’s Larissa” and spelled it out for him. I managed to record him signing and handing it back over to me I said “Thank you! I hope you have fun!” (I planned to say this in Japanese but I totally BLANKED OUT LOL) Then I set my camera on the table and tried asking again for a hug again “Can I get a hug?” But he was still confused so I asked again “Can I get a hug?” and gestured with my hand this time and he finally understood and gave me a hug and said “Ok ok” It was just a one arm hug, since he was sitting but OMG I WAS SO HAPPY I GOT A HUG FROM JUNSU! I said “Thank you so much!” and walked back to my seat. The thought of asking for a picture with him DID cross my mind for a sec, but I felt like I asked for enough already and didn’t want to bother him. Go back to your iPad, Junsu haha ^o^ Omg & when I talked to him my voice became kinda girly XDD What had you done to me, Junsu??!! LOL!

Anyways, I could have sat closer so I could see him better but I didn’t wanna do that haha. I really don’t like to be creepy, but I wanted to record him so I just went back to my original seat farther away and recorded a little. My friend Ana called at that time so I was spazzing on the phone with her, “I’M LOOKING AT JUNSU RIGHT NOW!!” LMAO! You should have seen how shaky I was, my voice all shaky too XDD It felt kinda like when it’s freezing and you’re like burrr! Lol! So as I was talking on the phone, I saw Junsu & the guys walk back towards the elevators with their coffee and breakfast (?). I recorded him walking by^^ He actually went to the valet parking elevators so he had left D: (I found out later he went Disneyland! hahaha!) I didn’t see him anymore after that (

Here’s my personally signed album!

So after about an hour I calmed down a bit after texting & tweeting to my friends XD I was back to waiting at my spot. Let me try to quickly get to the Jaejoong part! I had also been waiting for a friend from twitter to come, but she didn’t end up going until the evening. My friend Julie came over around 12-1pm to wait too and I finally got a chance to quickly grab some food and Starbucks close by while she watched XD I WAS STARVING! TOT I think I slept for a few minutes too. A couple hours went by and Julie had to leave. I had been sleepy for couple hours already, but I had to stay alert! :O I was thinking If one of them comes out soon (Well, it’d have to be JJ since Chun was still in Korea), I’ll definitely wake up! ><

THEN AT 3:30PM!!

I saw two people come out from the elevators, but I had paid attention to the wrong guy at first! Hmm who’s that guy? Ah nevermind, it’s no one… But then I saw the guy walking beside him! They were walking towards the front entrance to leave. I was like Wait! That beanie! Those jeans! THAT STYLE!! Could it be…??!! So I got up to get a closer look, cuz I was still unsure. Then I saw his hair color and a bit of his face! (But he was wearing sunglasses). OMG!! JAEJOONG??! IT IS HIM!! But he left too quick and I realized it too slow so I didn’t have a chance to go up to him!! DDDX Plus there had been 2 fans sitting on the couches by the entrance earlier, but I guess they left. So I thought the girl sitting there now was one of them and was thinking Why isn’t she getting up and going up to him?? It’s Jaejoong! But I realized she was just a regular guest LOL. I couldn’t even record or take a pic cuz I was busy wondering if it was really Jaejoong Dx I just saw him leave in a white car (which I was told was probably Mrs. Egg’s car).

After that, I was REALLY alert and awake. I went to get a better seat of the entrance, since they were both out now, they’ll come back through the entrance. Sadly I didn’t see them again :( ( (Yoochun hadn’t arrived in LA, so there was no way to see him then. But I saw him in the car after the concert, except he left and there was a big crowd of fans)

I left the hotel at 6pm, wished I could have stayed longer, but I was happy with what I got!^^ I also met 2 other cassies who there I think a couple hours before I left.

Sorry if this was too long! D: Thanks if you read all this! It was the first time I ever got to see any of them outside of a concert really close! Ahh Junsu was so cute and good looking! (I did see how good looking JYJ were at the Showcase last year cuz I was at the floor, but this was different!) I loved the eye contact so much! Junsu smiling and looking right at you is just….gaaah! X3 He’s such an angel and he was soo sweet! I’ll always remember this day! <333

Oh and here’s my fancam!:

2011 JYJ World Wide Tour in Los Angeles

The third stop of JYJ (Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu)’s World Tour in the U.S and Canada was held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Although the concert wasn’t scheduled to start til 8PM, fans started entering the venue at 7PM. While the lower seating sections were mostly sold out, the view of the balcony was disappointing as many seats were left unoccupied. Regardless, the highly anticipated concert saw thousands of dedicated fans who traveled hundreds of miles to see the trio in flesh-and-blood. There were even fans who came from as far as Canada, claiming they did not get enough of the three stars at the concert’s first stop in Vancouver. The concert started 15 minutes later than planned, but fans displayed no sign of impatience as they excitedly chattered with one another while waiting.

At 8:15 PM (PST), the once dark stadium transformed into a roaring red ocean at the trigger of the music for “Empty“, the hit track from their global album “The Beginning.” The trio successfully hyped up the audience right from the beginning with the upbeat song, and executed the choreography perfectly in see through boxes. Junsu’s mesmerizing pelvic thrusts during the chorus was probably the best part of the performance. The music then transitioned into their self-composed and written songs, “I.D.S(I Deal Scenario)” and “Nine“. Right into the second song, the members were already sweating bullets, giving 110% of their energy into the performances.

JYJ then took a short break to interact with the fans. Yoochun, being the most fluent in English, lead the conversation by he asking the audience, “How’s everyone feeling?!” which was met with even louder screams from the crowd, if that was even possible. The boys then continued feeding into the extreme energies of the audience as they performed to “Pierrot” and then following up with a slow-paced track composed by Rodney Jerkins, “Be My Girl“, which displayed the sexy side of JYJ. The audience was greeted with a video showing footages from the photoshoot for their album, “The Beginning”, before the trio came out in new outfits for “Be the One” and “Ayyy Girl“. Yoochun kicked off the first solo performance of the night with “I Love You“, and caused screams of jealousy from his fans when he got a little more than intimate with his all female dancers.

Next up was a short ear piercing drum performance that sent a rush of excitement through the crowd, followed by the boys’ appearance which set the stage on fire, literally, for “Mission“. Junsu then showcased his strong vocal abilities with his solo, “I Can Soar,” while Jaejoong rounded up the solo performances afterwards with, “I Still Love You.” Again, both performances were met with all female dancers, causing more jealousy among the fans.

The dancers then came on to the stage to perform a special dance for the audience, buying time for JYJ to change outfits for their next song, “Chajatta(Found You).” As it was for their previous showcase in Los Angeles, the song was definitely a crowd pleaser. For the next two ballad songs, “Fallen Leaves” and “Boy’s Letter,” the trio sung their hearts out to the crowd. Their breathtaking voices blaring from the speakers was so overwhelming that fans halted their cheering and just listened in awe while trying to stop their tears from falling.

Changing the mood of the show, the music transitioned into a fun and upbeat remix of “Be My Girl”. Before the show had started, videos of the tutorial for the dance was played to encourage fans to dance during the song. Although the fans were not able to completely grasp the whole dance, they all tried their best and gave JYJ a fun flashmob to watch. The boys then departed from the stage, creating a feeling of emptiness in the room. Fans desperately began chanting “JYJ” over and over again for the next 5 minutes before JYJ reappeared to a remix of “Empty” that blasted from the speakers, but still couldn’t overpower the loud and clear fanchants from the crowd.

Afterwards, the trio left once again, acting as if the show had ended. Feeling their happiness being depleted, the fans started chanting “JYJ” even louder than before. Hearing the fans’ prayers, JYJ came out for the last song of the night, “In Heaven“. The beautiful melody accompanied by the breathtaking voices of the three members was the perfect song to end an unforgettable night.

I have witnessed JYJ live once before during their showcase in Los Angeles, but this concert easily topped it as one of the best events of my life. Words cannot describe this concert justice, it’s just something you have to be present for to understand how unbelievably amazing it really is. Seeing fans of both genders, and all ages, and ethnicity come together for the concert has made me realize that music is truly a universal language. While exiting the stadium, I overheard a conversation between two middle-age American men who regarded the concert as “absolutely amazing.” and I couldn’t agree with them more.

110528 “I’ve Never Seen Anyone With As Much Emotion Naturally Embedded In Their Voice As Junsu.”

These days, the focal point of K-pop is vocal talent. The vocal talent of singers has come under scrutiny through auditions or survival programs and the movement is so fervent that one wonders if there ever really was a time when the meaning of a singer as ‘a person who sings’ was lost to the appearance of idol groups. Some shake nervously as they sing in front of audience evaluators on TV survival programs while one congressman declared that lip syncing should be banned to stop the constant activities of singers who can dance but not sing.

Many think that singers are born with extraordinary vocal skills. But the nation’s best vocal trainer Park Seon Joo(40), who is also a singer, composer and teacher to many stars, says, “That’s not true.” She has been a vocal trainer for 10 years, during a time when most people didn’t even know what a vocal trainer was, and has raised many famous stars such as TVXQ, Cool, SG Wannabe, Yoon Mirae, Kim Bum Soo and Ref. She recently taught top stars such as Lee Bum Soo, Lee Byung Hun and Jung Woo Sung.

Countless singers and actors have passed through Park Seon Joo’s hands, leaving her with that many deep memories. “I met JYJ’s Xiah Junsu when he was in the 8th grade. Because he was going through puberty, we focused on vocalization methods. I’ve never seen anyone with as much emotion naturally embedded in their voice as Junsu.”

110527 Concert Review: JYJ @ Prudential Arena, Newark, NJ

It was a chilly, drizzly Sunday evening when I arrived at Prudential Center for JYJ’s Newark concert on the 22nd of May. There weren’t nearly as many people as I had expected –- I guess I was picturing something similar to the lines that spanned avenues at last November’s JYJ showcase in Manhattan. Then again, it was a Sunday night, and this was Newark, of all places.

That’s not to say that the energy level was low though, because fans – ranging from hoards of young teenyboppers to older married women (and the families they dragged along with them) – were bouncing off the walls in excitement.

JYJ fans are perhaps the most organized and dedicated fans I’ve encountered. I learned that they had a meet-up at the nearby park distributing red t-shirts hours before doors opened. At the venue, girls in red from head to toe were making their rounds, handing out glowsticks, red light sticks, and white light sticks, which I was told (on multiple occasions, mind you) were to be saved for the very last song.

Once doors opened and the crowd rushed inside, the huge arena felt eerily empty at first. I overheard a guy, probably in his late teens, chuckle as he followed his friends down to their seats. “There’s like nobody here,” he scoffed (only to be hit in the arm by the girls he came with). By the time the show started, the venue was filled to about …60% capacity, 70% maybe.

After the “Be My Girl (Remix)” dance tutorial was shown on the big screen and a few instrumental versions of JYJ songs played, it was finally showtime.

The lights went out, and the chanting/screaming/squealing began.

Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu – collectively known as JYJ – rose from beneath the stage after a dramatic pause following the piano intro to “Empty.” The trio was dressed from head to toe in shiny suits: Jaejoong in red, Yoochun in blue, and Junsu in green. Each with different patterns and feathered accessories, but shiny nonetheless.

After pumping up the crowd with “Empty” and “I.D.S (I Deal Scenario),” the three stood in the center of the extended stage, soaking up the JYJ chants from the audience.

I’ll probably never know if they were disappointed with the turnout that night, but there was a clear difference in energy between the first couple songs and the rest of the concert. It wasn’t that they weren’t trying, but they had a far-off look on their faces, like something else was on their mind. Either way, I think the intensity of the chanting shook them out of their daze because the next song, “Nine,” was executed beautifully.

In that moment, as the three harmonized during that captivating ballad, I finally understood why MTV K readers chose Jaejoong as K-Pop’s Sexiest Male Idol. Sure, I always thought he was kind of handsome (in a girly sort of way), but seeing him in person made me realize just how gorgeous this guy actually is. (Fine, Sunny, you win).

As for Junsu, you can’t say anything about his looks until you’ve seen him in person. The camera does not do him justice. It’s a unique mix of adorable and masculine, and he oozes with charisma onstage. Yoochun also looks younger and much more handsome than pictures make him out to be, and his playful smile is absolutely infectious.

“Welcome to the JYJ Worldwide Tour!”

Yoochun did most of the talking throughout the night. Jaejoong and Junsu each piped in with their rehearsed lines, “Enjoy the show!” and “Let’s have a good time together!” before Yoochun introduced the next song, “Pierrot.”

…Or “Pyro,” as he pronounced it. (Not that anyone minded).

An hour into the show brought us to a smooth performance of “Be My Girl,” followed by a behind-the-scenes slideshow video of the trio as they headed backstage for a costume change.

As JYJ performed “Be The One” and “Ayy Girl” in their sleek black and silver outfits, I got a real sense of their experience and professionalism. Being onstage is like second nature for these guys — effortlessly belting out notes while performing intense choreography, comfortably making use of the entire stage, and interacting with the female dancers to get their fans screaming. JYJ are true performers, in the fullest extent of the word.
But that’s the thing that gets me. You’d think that after performing sold-out shows at huge stadiums like Japan’s Tokyo Dome that they’d just resort to half-assing the choreography. Why? Because obviously, they’d look still good doing that.

But they don’t. And that calls for some respect.

For their individual performances, Yoochun, Junsu, and Jaejoong each sang their solo songs from The Beginning, starting with Yoochun’s “I Love You.”

Even before JYJ was formed, I never considered Yoochun a particularly strong singer, but I guess I was wrong because he really does hold his own. My appreciation for his unique timbre and almost-husky voice was interrupted when a female dancer put her hands between his leg and grabbed his crotch. It took me a second to snap out of the shock, but props to him for keeping it together as the dancers each took their turn rubbing up against him. Fans were going crazy, but I couldn’t tell if they were mortified… or jealous?
Junsu’s solo was simply breathtaking. I found myself ignoring the elementary lyrics of “I Can Soar” because he was able to make them sound so precious, and I barely noticed his ugly objectionable belted top while he serenaded the lone ballerina upstage.

Jaejoong’s artsy solo performance, “Still in Love,” was the epitome of his creative direction as concert director. Two male dancers held up a sheer curtain across the stage that the female dancers incorporated into their sexy choreography. Compared to Junsu and Yoochun, Jaejoon maintains a more graceful composure onstage. Anyone else in his shoes might give off a detached, almost haughty impression, but Jaejoong carries himself with an elegant and mysterious air of confidence.

“Found You” from the soundtrack of Yoochun’s drama, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, came after a short dance break introducing JYJ’s dancers (though we never actually learned their names). Everyone in the stadium was singing along, and JYJ seemed pleased at the immense popularity of the song, playfully interacting with each other and the crowd.

“Are you guys having a good time?!” Yoochun yelled after the song ended. He asked Jaejoong and Junsu to say something as well, but they started drinking their water bottles to avoid talking, even though Yoochun said they could speak in Korean.

“Thank you so much for being here,” he said, giving a huge grin. Fans in the front started yelling something, so he leaned forward and whispered back, “I love you too.”

Once the euphoric screaming subsided, he introduced the next song, “Fallen Leaves.”

“We wrote this song thinking about you guys."

The biggest treat of the night was getting to hear the full live versions of the four (count ‘em!) not-yet-released JYJ songs.

1. “Boy’s Letter” is another beautiful ballad that highlights JYJ’s mastery of harmonizing. At one point the music practically cuts off and Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu carry out the lines with such emotion and power. And Junsu… when he sang “Now, I will make your heart beat…” I almost forgot to breathe. I don’t know how any audio recording will be able to capture the depth he brings to this song.

2. “You’re” is similar to “Found You” in that it’s a mid-tempo track with a bright melody. It was also nice to see Yoochun rapping in Korean again, his original element, and Jaejoong and Junsu’s ad libs in the background made for a refreshing mix. And of course, fans were eating up the lyrics: “Because we are one.” JYJ really knows how to please their fans. Not to mention later on when Yoochun screamed “Always Keep the Faith” as they walked off the stage. What a player.

3. “Get Out” raised the energy level up a few notches. JYJ came out wearing jeans, their white JYJ t-shirts, and colorful jackets (my favorite look that night). I was surprised at how many fans already knew the words to this song (well actually, all of the unreleased songs), and the interaction between JYJ and the crowd was at its peak during this portion of the concert, including the remixes of “Be My Girl” and “Empty” that came right before and after this song.

[Bonus: Yoochun screamed F*** You towards the end of the song, even though there was already a bleep placed in the song. Maybe he was just so excited and thought it'd be a cool thing to do. How cute.]

4. “In Heaven,” the encore song, was by far the highlight of the show. Everyone pulled out their white light sticks (if they hadn’t already), and the mix of red and white made for a surreal atmosphere as Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu, still drenched in sweat from the “Empty” remix, sang their heart out for the last song of the night.

The song itself kind of reminds me of TVXQ’s “Love in the Ice.” It’s a powerful heart-wrenching ballad that calls for the trio’s rawest, most emotive vocals, and I was blown away for the umpteenth time.

“In Heaven” was the perfect song to end the show – with the most appropriate lyrics (“Don’t go, don’t go, I love you, I love you…”) to wrap things up.

The three seemed pleased with themselves. They looked beyond tired, but there was a glimmer of satisfaction in their faces. Like, “Wow, look at what we just did.”

“Thank you so much for being here. We really hope to see you again at our next concert. We’ll work hard, so please cheer us on. Thank you, thank you.” As Junsu closed with these words, JYJ took a long dramatic bow, and the night was finally over.

I think what impressed me the most was neither JYJ’s superior vocals nor their precise dancing skills. It was the energy with which they performed. If anyone was watching Yoochun during the “Empty (Remix)” performance, they’ll know what I’m talking about.

Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu poured their everything into those two hours, knowing that within days, weeks, they’d be doing the same exact thing in another city, another country. It was borderline desperate, but mostly just impressive…

And that’s when it struck me. Have they really gone back to this rookie mindset? Was this really a new beginning for them?

Maybe in their heads they’ve just started this new journey to climb up to the top, but their bodies and voices say otherwise. JYJ are veterans to the stage. There’s no denying it. Music is their home, the stage their natural environment – and it definitely shows.

People say that you never really hear an artist’s music until you see it live.

For JYJ, that saying has never been more true.
