Is there a Japanese backlash against the Hallyu wave?

It’s no secret that as of late, Korean entertainment companies have been setting their sites on the greater pool of fame and fortune laying a short plane ride away, in the island nation of Japan. Idol group after idol group has either debuted or been slated for a Japanese release. The dramas and the television programs follow. The reasons behind it are not difficult to see.  Japan has a far larger music industry than Korea. Being a small fry in the Japanese industry will still rake in far more profit than being a small fry in the Korean industry. However, as of late, it’s becoming quite evident that not all Japanese are welcoming of the “Hallyu Wave”.  Protests have jumped from the bowels of the internet to fronts of television network buildings.
According to Japanese Internet news outlets such as J-CAST, roughly 6,000 people gathered outside Fuji Television Network to protest what they believed was too much time allotted to “Korean Wave” content on TV.
“We do not want to watch Korean TV dramas,” protesters chanted, adding that Fuji TV should not force people to watch programs they did not want to see.
They added that the Japanese people desired more homegrown programs on TV.

These protests come on the heels of the controversy surrounding the firing of Japanese actor Sousuke Takaoka from his agency, after he made some negative remarks concerning the recent flood of Korean entertainment into Japan. This kind of conflict is not surprising, given the history between Korea and Japan. But it leaves the question: are Japanese netizens being irrational in their negative reaction to the Hallyu Wave? And what can be done to minimize backlash?

The first, rather obvious point that people will make is that despite all the negative attention, Korean music seems to be selling quite well anyway, with recent acts such as SNSD and Kara topping Japanese pop charts. Kara has been gathering a significant fan base inJapan, and does seem to be growing genuinely popular, but this does not hold true for the vast majority of other K-pop groups. The majority of the imported groups sell very well, but hold little consequence in the mainstream because they have an extremely small, loyal niche of K-pop fans that buy up physical albums. These fans are not reflective of the average casual listener; they are like other overseas Korean idol fans. They are devoted, but exist outside of the mainstream trend.

Once the fact that Korean groups are, on average, not enjoying runaway success is established, it leaves the question: why does the Japanese public tend not to like K-entertainment? It’s tempting to say that it boils down to a matter of historical tension and nothing more, but that fails to dig deep enough. There is a pervasive assumption that Korean groups are only gaining airtime because powerful Korean zainichi executives are cutting deals within the Japanese industry to give them the spotlight, thereby shutting out native music groups. Given the number of zainichi executives giving rookie K-groups ample, easy opportunity to promote in the industry, it is a hard accusation to refute. Add this to the recent economic crisis caused by the earthquake and tsunami and a stew of general bitter feelings is created. It may be that if K-pop idols gave the impression of working hard to achieve their fame, then some of these problems might have been overlooked by the public. However, when very few groups even bother to learn Japanese, let alone record original songs or promote properly, it makes the fact that the attempts to break through are nothing more than a grab for money even more obvious.

There is no easy fix for this situation. There are extremely racist Japanese netizens, determined to never give a Korean group the time of day, as there are xenophobic Korean entertainment executives who want the money but cannot quite conceal their distaste regarding Japan. However, if more groups took the route that DBSK took, and worked from the bottom up rather than taking advantage of cheap media grabs, then it would go a long way towards improving things. Do you think that the system for debuting groups in Japan should be changed? Do you think that any groups will achieve a greater level of success within the current system?

JYJ – Anan Interview (Forbidden Issue)

Note from SYC team
1. This interview was during 3HREEVOICES II DVD time.
2. Jaejoong and Yoochun flew to Japan before Junsu.
3. The interview contained the boys’ thoughts before their Charity Events in Japan.
4. This is the forbidden issue.

[TOHOSHINKI] a 5 member group that was extremely popular.

But 2009 summer, a shocking incident occurs. Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu, these 3 members filed a law suit against their agency to stop their contracts.

This made the “5 member” Tohoshinki’s activities to be suspended.

It has been a year and a half. The 3 members are facing many difficulties but have a new start as “JYJ”.

In Korea, they are not being able to go on music programs, and even in Japan, their activities are a blank.
Even at a situation like that, the album they released showed a big response, and through dramas, musicals,CF’s, their solo activities have been well received.

They are continuously showing results.

Also this month, the long-waited private DVD is going to be released.

The members who visited Japan after a long time, for a photoshoot, the fans welcomed them with passion.
The 3 members who are making their way, one step at a time right now, will we be able to interview them…?
They have finally responded to our offer.

JYJ who were filming for a DVD in Korea, we headed to Seoul in order to meet them!

Please enjoy the interview that was answered seriously, and the many expressions they showed the camera.

A day in March. In Seoul, Gangnam.

—– It’s”welcome back” right?
First of all, Yoochun-san, and Jaejoong-san, how was the photoshoot in Japan, after a long time?

Yoochun(YC): When I saw the Haneda Airport I thought, oh~ we’re in Japan, and was able to acknowledge it.

It has changed a lot! But seeing that, I thought, ‘Oh it’s Japan’. I went to many different places. Like the Tokyo Tower, Odaiba, Meguro-Gawa, and etc.

Jaejoong(JJ): Same for me. We didn’t go everywhere together though. Oh! And Shibuya! It was so crowded, that hasn’t changed! The DVD’s theme was “a place with a memory”.

YC: For instance, the Tokyo Tower was when we went for Tanabata. That time, we wrote on the paper with our wish on it, and hung it on a tree…ah,bamboo?

—— Do you remember what you wrote?

YC: I don’t remember- *laughs*

Junsu(JS): I remember! I wrote, I want to stand on a stage in Japan.

YC: …? Tokyo Dome right?

———– So, you remember *laughs*. Junsu-san, you re going to go after this, but where are you planing to go?

JS: I haven’t picked yet, but I’m thinking of going to the hot springs.

JJ: That’s a vacation, not work *laughs*

JS: Because, when I think memory in Japan, of course its the hot springs!

During the tour, we went with out members too.

YC: Hot springs are good. This time, I didn’t have time to do those things.

JS: More like, I only have hot springs to go too, so I told the other two they can’t go!

JJ: In the beginning we talked about where we want to go. But the places with memory…it’s alike
Yoochun and I went to all the places in the beginning, so Junsu had no where to go.

JS: Where should I go.

YC: What about FujiQ high land?

JS: Ah, that’s good. We have memory there too.

YC: Like Dodonpa. (a roller coaster ride at fujiQ)

JS: Until I get there,(to Fuji Q) it should be fun too.

JJ: But I think we will end up going to the same places, for sure.

JS: ….well,if it ends up like, there’s nothing we can do…. But, the most important thing is that we’re going to Japan.

We want to go back to Japan and have a tour.

YC: Yeah. Japan is, how do I say it…it’s already been 6 years.

JJ: Yeah. So it’s not really a foreign place anymore. But after last year’s a-nation, we didn’t go for like half a year.

Half a year is really long.

JS: It is long. For more than 5 years, we were going back and forth between Korea and Japan. So it was the first time, not going to Japan for half a year.

JJ: You forget the words too.

——— So you do forget the language.

JJ: But when you use it, you remember it.

JS: Right now, I’m speaking in Japanese after a really long time.

JJ: When you go to Japan again, you’ll be able to speak naturally. Yoochun was with Korean staff, but out of no where, he was speaking Japanese *laughs*

YC: I still watch “One Piece” on television every week.

——– Speaking of Japanese, Jaejoong-san had tweeted in Japanese several times but the two don’t use Japanese that often.

YC: Junsu, can you type Japanese?

JS: I can’t.

YC: Me too. I don’t know how. Since I’m doing it (tweeting) from my phone, I can’t type Japanese.

JS: I get asked from Japanese fans, “If I write in Japanese, can Junsu read it?” but we can read it. We can read it but we can’t type it. System-wise.

————– For half a year, the Japanese fans were ” Lacking JYJ”, but when you were in Korea, were you able to feel that?

JJ: We did feel that. A lot. They flew from Japan to come to our events and concerts.

Many fans from Japan came to watch Junsu’s musical, and several hundred people came to visit Yoochun’s drama set. On twitter and online, everyone is passionate.

I feel that, they are waiting for us all this time.

JS: Because we were able to feel everyone’s feelings, it was hard for us…. we wanted to go.
We wanted to go to Japan and meet everyone in Japan, we had feelings of apology.

——– How do your feelings towards doing activities in Japan differ from then and now?

JS: (Thinking for a long time) Out feelings haven’t changed that much.

We feel that doing activities in Japan itself, we want to… treasure it… and work hard a lot.

It was the same before, but it’s like that again. That kind of feeling/sense.

YC: If we can normally do activities like before that it would be good but…. we have many different issues, and can’t right now.

I want to go back to Japan as soon as possible and have a tour… A tour and things other than tours, I want to be able to make a lot of chances to meet everyone.

Because we have the fans support, we can think not to give up.

——– Last year, not just in Korea and Asia, you did some activities on Japan. What is your future plans?

JJ: Nothing is decided yet. In April, we’re going to have a world tour, and it’s after finishing the world tour.

——– Jaejoong-san, you’re the director for the world tour right?

JJ: Ah, yes! I decide the main/basic performance, and create the set list.

The live we did in Korea last year is used as the basic, and we’ll add a few more songs, change the performance, and edit the music orders. I’m hoping that it will be good.

——- it seems like you guys are going snow boarding, going a family trip, and having a satisfying private life. Is it like doing everything you all wanted to do before, all at once?

JS: Yes.

YC: Mmmm, I’m not really thinking about things like that, I’m just doing what came in my mind and thought “maybe I should do this-”.

———- Right now, at what times do you feel the most happiness?

YC: Everyday. (living life to the fullest) Everyday, I’m happy. Lately I’ve been going to eat with my family, now I have time to do things like that.

To be able to do those things, I now have more confidence, and time.

JS: For me… well, I think there is many different types of happiness but I feel the most happiness when I’m singing on stage.

Right now, there’s very little place I can feel that happiness…. The stage in Japan too, I’m hoping that we have more chance to sing on many stages. I want to feel the happiness I get from that more.

—— Last years New Years Eve,when Yoochun-san received the rookie award on “KBS Drama Award”, the 3 sang the title song “Found You” on stage.

YC: yes, for the first time.

JS: Last year singing that on stage was the first, and the last on television! *laughs*

——— How did you feel?

JS: it was a mix feeling… of course I was happy. I was happy but, feeling “happy” with just this one performance, it made me feel sad about myself that it made me happy.

But since it was a day to congratulate Yoochun and a happy day, I wanted to only think about good things. What I think is good is that, as an artist, being able to stand on stage isn’t a “normal” thing but “something really important”, that’s what we realised, that was really big….for us 3. With feelings like that, I think we matured compared to last year, and the year before.

JJ: What was normal became something that isn’t normal.

JS: Even during the difficult times, all of our fans are supporting us everyday, we feel that we cant give up, with that feeling right now, the 3 of us are “Gyu”/ hugging. *laughs* (Gyu- a sound effect in Japanese when you hug)

JYJ Staff Member's Blog Post Part 3

Eldest son Jaejoong… Middle son Yoochun… Youngest child Junsu…

When I met Junsu, he was a bit different from the image I had had. On the previous day I had seen such an amazing performance so I thought he would be hard to get close to and cheeky too because of his inherent talent but then…he was super honeset and pure, like a cute little brother (sorry, don’t get angry lol)
You just can’t hate him.

Jaejoong was right in front of me and Yoochun was sitting to the left of him. It felt like Yoochun was the staff officer for leader Jaejoong? (It doesn’t necessarily match the image. This was my first impression) Junsu was sitting by himself on a sofa on the left, he had his legs up on the sofa and was very relaxed.

Then since the theme for this time is Tokyo, we started discussing where they wanted to go, who they wanted to meet, what kind of memories would be there… etc etc and the our conversation continued to get heated.
Glancing at the left I see Junsu sulking, “I’m all alone…” Jaejoong and Yoochun are going to Japan together but due to Junsu’s schedule he will go alone.

“I want to go hot springs! I want to go to the haunted house in Fuji Q Highlands! And Okinawa! And Egypt! Don’t leave me all alone…” Junsu sulked. At that Jaejoong got up, walked over to Junsu, and gave him a hug.
How gentle of Jaejoong….even by acting like a spoiled child just a little, Junsu trusts Jaejoong with his all. As this was going on, Yoochun sat smiling watching over.

It was this moment when I felt like they were innocent cute puppies playing around. Jaejoong, who amuses himself by teasing around with Junsu, is something he probably does as an older brother. This was when I felt a brotherly love. Thinking about it now, Yoochun is very much like the middle child, Junsu being the youngest.
In other words, a strong solidarity…the three are linked by a strong bond of trust…this relationship is unbreakable…They each have different characters but when you put them together they are JYJ. They definitely show a tremendous power.

This is why I wanted to join the 3 of them yesterday…the aura emanating from them was amazing.

JYJ Staff Member's Blog Post Part 2

Off to Seoul to meet the three of them

Working on a project that was previously based in Korea, I am also involved in it so I went to Korea the other day and met with them.

As I wasn’t involved in this project previously, I decided to participate with the name “Hayato”. This project is being made by the three of them, and it is being made jut for the fans. So it is being produced with this honest and pure hearted kindess. In other words, this project does not involve people who have used the three of them previously as business tools or as objects to eat off from.

Moving on to their proposal:
To let the worried fans have a peace of mind. In order to do that, stop dwelling on the past and look towards the future; show an optimistic side of JYJ. And then, take the fans along with us on this journey. This was the idea. Therefore, there are no scenarios or scripts….we will simply tell the truth.
Jaejoong then asked me, “Are we not allowed to speak Korean?”

“Fans from many different countries will watch this so we will be including subtitles, therefore the language you choose to speak in is not important. What I want you to keep important are your feelings,” I answered. “When you want to tell them something in Japanese, speak in Japanese. When you want to talk in Korean, talk in Korean…and then show the fans how much you’ve sweat with all your work,” I said. “Also, show the fans the JYJ that completely matured and deliver to them how you’ve worked hard so they can feel a peace of mind…. Give them hope.”

Following, is the state they were in when I went to visit them.

After having a tough work trip in Jakarta for 10 days and without a time to rest I went to Seoul on Saturday (February 19th) in order to meet Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu. In Jakarta I had to create 2 TVC products so I had to endure lack of sleep. Then on top of that in order to catch my early flight from Haneda I had to sleep for an hour at the airport.

Slept a little on the plane and then after reaching the hotel I slept for about an hour too. Then my first destination was to go to the theater and watch Junsu’s performance in Tears of Heaven musical.

Naturally there were a lot of people gathered here. I’m pretty sure there were Japanese people too but it was hard to distinguish from the crowd.

It would be good if I didn’t fall asleep….but I was worried that I would.

But then from the moment the curtains were raised there was not a single moment I fell asleep. Actually I think the right think to say would be that I was crying the whole time.

Joon (did I spell it right?) and Lin is a tragic love story but even in the scenes where they were happy would not make the tears stop.

Since I’m a guy I can’t even use a handkerchief (useless vanity) so I didn’t wipe the tears but I never thought that it would continue until the end…

Junsu’s singing power was perfect!!! Perfect acting!!! The supporting actors that strengthen the performance were also amazing!!! The story was great and the set was great too. And more than anything else, his heartbreaking voice was the best.

It has been gaining a lot of great admiration from Korea, and it seems that America has taken notice too.
There’s a difference between being popular and standing on stage and being on stage in a different country.
They were THE professionals!!!!

When it finished, of course there was a standing ovation…Without thinking I had also gotten up and applauded as hard as I could…I wanted to honestly express my admiration.

During curtain call, Junsu gave a special greeting to someone sitting in the front seat. I’m quite sure Yoochun’s mother came to watch too. Maybe it was for her?

The next Sunday

The second purpose: I went to their office to meet the three of them.

As I passed by the lobby area, there was a large picture of the three of them on the wall. Jaejoong came and greeted me. He was a bit surprised by the sudden Japanese greeting but he welcomed me. Truly such a beautiful face.

After that came Junsu. First we shook hands. “I saw your performance yesterday,” I said.

“Eh! You came to see it?!”

“I couldn’t stop crying. It was very beautiful.” As I said that, he said happily like a child, “The story was good right? But did you understand?”

“I understood the story somewhat from the English subtitles.”

And then Yoochun who arrived a bit late. He was even more handsome than I imagined. I also got the impression that he was intelligent too. I was fascinated beyond words.

The three of them listened to what I had to say, nodding along. And it seemed I had received their excitement because they started to express their own thoughts and ideas as if the floodgates had been raised.

I think this time I achieved almost 100% of the role I was there for, for the three of them.

There is only one thing I can say about this here: soon a great message will be delivered to the fans by these three who are now scattered all over the country.

This is the true honest figures of the three.

I told them, “I want to tell the truth to the fans without any lies. Let’s let them know that the three of you are looking towards a future. And let’s take the fans with us.”

As I said this their eyes were shining. For now I will leave it at that. We decided to take a picture so I stood on their left. But then Junsu then casually let me stand between him and Jaejoong.

As I looked at the three of them, they looked like cute innocent puppies playing around. I thought.

Jaejoong and Yoochun were coming to Japan on the 23rd so I waited for them at the hotel. They arrived late so we were able to meet again after about two and a half hours. Due to fog the plane had been delayed, and there had been some other trouble so the first day did not go as planned but it seemed that the fans were very happy for their visit which I was pleased about. Anyway, the Japanese fans have really good manner so that made me proud.

This is a message to all the fans so if it made you happy, I’m happy too!!

In my opinion, I think this is a happiness that cannot be bought with money.

According to the annual celebrity search ranking that is released by Japan’s largest portal site Infoseek, TVXQ and Park Yong Ha are placed 4th and 12th, respectively.

...
On the December 3rd, Infoseek announced its ’2010 Annual Keyword Ranking’, and TVXQ earned 724 points thus placed the group at 4th place. Next year, TVXQ will comeback with two members, U-Know Yunho and Choikang Changmin.

The suicide of Park Yong Ha in last June attracted a lot of attention and earned the late actor 323 points for 12th rank. These points are also influenced by his volunteer work that was documented by a Japanese broadcaster entitled ‘INNOCENT WORD Park Yong Ha, Travel to Africa’.

Meanwhile the first place of the rank was occupied by none other but Japan most popular group Arashi that gained 1055 points. Japanese model Kayo Sato who just recently made a shocking confession about her having a sex reassignment surgery was placed 2nd (762 points), followed by best group EXILE (728 points) on 3rd.
