As these votes came from all over Asia, the meaningfulness, as well as burden on my shoulders become greater. I think that the artists and staff working hard together to produce good works is a way of repaying the fans.”

Following that, he said “This is not just a global promotion of cultural content, but the reason why these people show love for hallyu, and working hard to understand those countries’ culture, these are also ways of repaying (their love.)” he supplemented.

Park Yoochun, who put up a great performance in last year’s KBS drama “SungKyunKwan Scandal, won by a landslide in the Korean actors category of the online popularity poll which was held between 18 July to 16 August, for a period of approximately one month.

On his secret to overseas popularity, he said. “I’m not exactly sure why there is so much love from overseas fans. More so than others, language is a big issue. Although I can’t express myself in various countries’ languages, I still hope that they can see my effort,” he said, evaluating himself.

MC: Mr. Park Yoochun, please say some words of your thoughts and feelings.
Yoochun: Thank you very much. A lot of people have gathered here. First of all, I would like to say that I am very happy to be receiving an award of such enormity. The people that contributed to the votes this time was people all over Asia, which is why it has a more deeper meaning and at the same time, I feel a certain pressure. It’s been like this from before but I feel that recently the Korean wave and our Korean contents has been receiving a lot of love so I think it is our duty, along with the staff and all production people to return this love by creating good products. Not just to simply display our culture in our products and give it out to the world, but to also understand the cultures from the countries that receive such love from and to put our efforts into this. This is how I feel we can return the feelings that we are getting from our viewers. Also beginning from now, I want to become a Park Yoochun who will work even harder. Thank you very much.

MC: Who is your rival amongst the stars in this Korean wave?
Yoochun: Rival? Recently…right now I can say that it’s the actor in SBS drama “Protect the Boss” (Jaejoong). Tomorrow I think I’ll be visiting their set, and althought he and I are very close he is someone that always has his guard up.

110825 JYJ appointed as UNAIDS goodwill ambassador – The first ‘Korean wave’ star acclaimed by UN

JYJ (Kim Jae-joong, Park Yoo-chun, and Kim Jun-su), a Korean pop band, has been named as ‘UNAIDS regional goodwill ambassador’, one of the UN agencies.

Today (25th August), UNAIDS (the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) is going to announce JYJ’s acceptance of UNAIDS regional goodwill ambassadorship for the Asia and pacific region.

JYJ is appointed as the 13rd UNAIDS’ goodwill ambassador. Before JYJ, Michael Ballack (international football player of German), Emmanuel Adebayor (international football player of Togo), Naomi Watts (renowned actress how has starred in films including King Kong), Annie Lennox (the world renowned Scottish singer songwriter and women’s activist) and others have committed as UNAIDS international goodwill ambassador. Amr Waked (an Egyptian Actor) is also an UNAIDS Regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Middle East and North Africa.

It’s known that JYJ’s the high recognition and popularity across the Asia and pacific is highly regarded by UNAIDS. Considering 3-40% of people living with HIV/AIDS are the youth, UNAIDS expect JYJ to encourage increased HIV awareness and fundraising for UNAIDS-related activities.

UNAIDs, which was launched in January 1996, has a role of protecting people from epidemic, monitoring it and supporting people living with HIV/AIDS. In addition, UNAIDS provides a report on the global AIDS epidemic, hold a conference on HIV/AIDS issues, and put efforts on alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

UNAIDS is guided by a ‘Programme Coordinating Board’ with representatives of 22 governments from all geographic regions, 9 UNAIDS Cosponsors, and five representatives of nongovernmental organizations. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. 169 countries (by 2011) are participating.

16th August, JYJ also accepted the role of official Ambassador for the 10th international Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP10), which is held by ASAP (AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific) and UNAIDS.

JYJ is going to appear 2011 10th Asia-Pacific AIDS Congress (ICAAP 10) opening ceremony which is holding in 26th August, BEXCO Busan, to attend an appointment ceremony. As a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador for the Asia and Pacific region (Regional Goodwill Ambassador), JYJ is to attend a charitable concert, as well as shooting public service advertisements and volunteer activities and so on, for one year.

From TVXQ to JYJ..Making a new leap forward

31st July, 2009. Hero Jae-joong, Micky Yoo-chun, and Xiah Jun-su, 3 members of ‘TVXQ’ submitted to the court for provisional disposition to terminate the validity of their exclusive contract with SM Entertainment.
“Because of the SM’s unilateral schedule for 5 years, we are exhausted both in mind and body” was the reason. After this legal action, they got the name of JYJ. Instead of four-letter name, they found the real name (Kim Jae-joong, Park yoo-chun, and Kim Jun-su), too.

Since then, however, the time of hardships was started. Apart from the SM’s objection which has overruled, Avex which managed TVXQ’s promotion in Japan ceased their activities. Also, the Union of Korean Pop Culture and Arts Industry made each broadcaster refrain JYJ’s appearance by sending a public document. It caused that a range of JYJ’s activities have been drastically narrowed.

Even though JYJ published their 1st album ‘The beginning’ on 12nd October, 2010 and hold showcase and world tour, these 3 men couldn’t sing their song at major terrestrial broadcasters. 2010 KBS Drama Awards Celebration was the JYJ’s first stage, but they could sing only the original sound track of ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, which Park yoo-chun acted as a main cast member. Last July, JYJ was scheduled to perform in a KBS broadcasted concert with other singers in Jeju for the 7 World Wonders campaign but received a cancellation notification unilaterally.

However, ‘restriction’ becomes a ‘plus’. Park yoo-chun carries his successful career as an actor, playing a main cast member in ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’(2010) and ‘Miss Ripley’(2011). Kim jae-joong, who already acclaimed as an actor in Japan, is now playing a role in a SBS’s high-rated drama series ‘Save my boss’. Kim jun-su also stood on the stage of musical ‘Mozart’ and ‘Tears in heaven’ in 2011. Recently, they are holding the photo exhibition ‘Mine’, showing people how JYJ spend their time and JYJ’s lifestyle.

Still, all they want is ‘standing on the stage’. Since they’re ‘singer’, they want to perform on the stage with their own album. Now, they’re appointing as UNAIDS regional goodwill ambassador for the Asia and pacific region. That’s the reason why JYJ’s the next move is attracting more attention.

110727 JYJ To Release Korean Album This Year‏

JYJ will release a Korean album in Korea finally. The release date is unconfirmed but JYJ has expressed that “The release is targeted to be this year and is currently in production.”

This Korean album release will be the 2nd album after “The Beginning” release during last year’s October. Upon reporter’s interview, they said, “Although it is good to fix the release date but it is still unconfirmed. This Korean album was prepared in order to thank the domestic fans.”

An interesting point this time will be whether JYJ are able to participate in promotional activities for this album. When the three members sang ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ theme song, Found You, the song came in first place in KBS’s Music Bank but was unable to appear on the programme and resulted in commotion. At that time, KBS expressed, “If it is an official album release, they will be able to appear on the music programme.” To this, CJeS said, “Hopefully there are not external pressure or prohibition this time.”

Additionally, JYJ received the cancellation notice for KBS’s “Jeju New 7th Wonder Wishes Special’ just four days before the broadcast and the representative company have submitted the complaint to the official committee.

110720 “It Was Impossible For JYJ To Appear”… Because Of Their Lawsuit With SM

KBS said, “It will be difficult for JYJ to partake in any non-individual activities until their lawsuit is over.”
This means that there will be close to no chance for JYJ to appear on KBS until their legal suit with SM Entertainment is over.

Meeting with Sports Seoul, a representative of KBS stated, “It will be difficult for JYJ to appear on KBS until the lawsuit with SM Entertainment is over.”

This statement came regarding the fact that JYJ were suddenly unable to perform at the ‘Jeju 7 Natural Wonders of the World Nomination KBS Special Program’ that was held on the 20th. JYJ were schedule to perform two songs for their stage but JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment revealed on the 17th that, “We received a one-sided notification of cancellation four days before the performance.”

C-JeS Entertainment stated, “We received the statement ‘If JYJ perform, it might be impossible for the show to be aired.’” Therefore, an ‘external pressure’ controversy arose that KBS is blocking JYJ from appearing on broadcasted shows. As the representative stated that it will be hard for JYJ to appear on KBS until the end of the lawsuit, the external pressure rumor seems to be somewhat true.

This representative also added, “But JYJ are able to partake in individual activities on KBS,” and “Park Yoochun appeared in the drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, didn’t he?”

However, there have been instances in which their individual activities have been restricted by KBS. Park Yoochun was chosen to appear on KBS 2TV’s ‘Kim Seung Woo’s On A Roll’ with actor Kim Kap Soo early this year but received a notification of cancellation the day before filming was to take place. The representative explained, “I’m sure it was JYJ who were asked to appear on the show, not just Park Yoochun alone.”

But when Sports Seoul contacted ‘Kim Seung Woo’s On A Roll’, the representative who answered the phone stated, “Park Yoochun was invited as he got to know Kim Kap Soo from ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’,” and “There was no reason for JYJ to appear together.”

JYJ’s fans have opened up a petition that calls for an official statement from KBS, KBS Jeju and the other sponsors in charge of the performance. They wish for these sponsors to give an exact reason and an official apology to JYJ.

110628 Park Yoochun practised script reading for 8 hours daily… “Good Actor Quality”‏

Born in 1986, Park Yoochun glamourously debuted as TVXQ’s member in 2004. Although he was a member of the leading Asian idol group, he, together with Kim Junsu and Kim Jaejoong, with the name of JYJ, independently moved away from their ex-company. The first performance was in 2010′s drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, and became one of the anticipated potential new actor, plus safekept the new fans that belonged only to JYJ. It also allows the JYJ who has difficult to step onto a stage, to appear on the stage of the drama award ceremony. Now, he who is currently acting in ‘Miss Ripley’, making his way as an actor.

“Although he already has the requirements of being a good actor, we did not expect that (his) first handling of history drama can be completed so well. With the practical and stability of practicing his lines everyday for 8 hours, with his large stage experiences and thus no fear of camera filming, fast adapting to the character, etc, there were lots of such virtues. Most importantly, when facing strong challenges, (he) has strong determination and passion. In the future, if (he) is able to be patient and seriously choose his works and creating, he would have the quality of becoming an even better actor.” (Kim Dong Rae – Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s production company, Raemong Raein’s representative)

110617 Park Yoo-chun proves star power on TV screen

Whether singing, acting, or narrating, he guarantees Asia-wide promotion. K-pop star Park Yoo-chun, who is taking on his second major TV drama, is proving his star power, as the show has drawn big attention both in the country and overseas.

The MBC drama “Miss Ripley,” in which Park plays an heir to a resort empire, had already been exported to Japan and the U.S. before it was finished, in a deal worth 1.8 billion won ($1.6 million). The chances are high that it will enter markets of China and Southeast Asian countries soon.

In Korea, the drama is the most watched one among Monday-Tuesday evening TV dramas, reaching high viewer ratings since its first episode. As many of his fans are Japanese, the drama website provides Japanese language service for the drama.

Park Yoo-chun (MBC)

Although he achieved fame as a singer at the boy band TVXQ and later JYJ, his acting has earned him even more popularity.

His previous drama, KBS’ “Seongkyunkwan Scandal,” which portrayed student life in the Joseon period, also attracted great viewership and won him the rookie actor of the year award at the Korea’s Paeksang Arts Award. His choice for playing a historical character for the first time has surprised many, but he later received praise for his acting.

He also narrates MBC documentary “The Hometown Where I Used to Live,” which airs on June 17. The MBC staff figured Park’s soothing voice would fit the concept of the documentary, depicting disappearing rural villages under the influence of urbanization in Korea.

“Miss Ripley” airs Monday and Tuesday nights at 9:50 p.m. on MBC and “The Hometown Where I Used to Live” will air Friday at 11:05 p.m.

Idols were rated for their ‘acting career up to date’ and ‘potential for growth’; TOP was rated the highest of everyone, averaging 7.6 and 8.0 out of 10, respectively. Concerning Ok Taecyeon, reviewers stated that he is “serious [about acting] and has that star quality, but because of his busy schedule he lacks the time to put that much effort into acting” (Lee Moon Won).

Amongst female idols, T-Ara’s Ham Eunjung who was also featured in “Dream High” received the highest score. Eunjung received a 6.3 in ‘acting career up to date’, placing 4th, but she placed 5th in ‘potential for growth’ with a score of 6.4. She was criticized, “her strong point is her everyday, next door type appearance, but she needs to gain experience” (Ahn Hyuk Mo).

T-Ara’s Jiyeon placed 7th in ‘acting career up to date’ but tied at 6th with CNBLUE’s Jung Yonghwa in ‘potential for growth’. Kara’s Goo Hara who is currently acting in SBS’s “City Hunter” scored the lowest in both categories. Professionals coldly criticized that “she needs to escape the shade of being an idol” (Yoon Suk Jin) and that “she is better fit as a singer” (Ahn Hyuk Mo).

Afterschool’s UEE placed 10th in ‘acting career up to date’ and tied with Goo Hara for 10th in ‘potential for growth’. She received criticisms that “she fits the current trend, but ultimately will fall behind” (Ko Young Tak) and that “she needs serious consideration in what else she could show other than her healthy appeal” (Huh Woong).

Kim Hyun Joong of SS501, who received big spotlights as one of the top upcoming Hallyu Stars through his roles in “Boys Before Flowers” and “Playful Kiss” tied for 5th in ‘acting career up to date’ with Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, but fell to 9th place in ‘potential for growth’. Kim Hyun Joong received harsh criticisms from the reviewers that “he needs more stable acting to receive lead roles” (Ko Young Tak) and “the fact he sells despite his downside was his strength, but even that is becoming blurry now” (Lee Moon Won).

Choi Siwon, who placed 5th in ‘acting career up to date’ and higher as 4th in ‘potential for growth’, received criticism that although his acting is somewhat stable, he is trapped in his roles within his handsome appearance.

There are mainly three routes in which idols enter their acting career.

First, the historical drama route: Fin.K.L’s Sung Yuri in “Thousand Years Love”, JYJ’s Park Yoochun in “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, and Afterschool’s UEE as young Misil in “Queen Seon Duk”. Historical dramas carry a specific tone for lines, and the recent rise of fusion-historical dramas make it easy for rookie actors and actresses to pull lines off. Historical dramas, rather than trendy dramas, also give the impression that the idol actors/actresses are taking acting more seriously.

Second, the musician role route: Jung Yonghwa of CNBLUE and Lee Hong Ki of FT Island in “You’re Beautiful” along with Miss A Suzy in “Dream High” are typical cases. Idols can showcase their talent and act naturally. In MBC’s “Fall In Love” which will air its first episode on the 29th of June, Jung Yonghwa will play the lead role as a college student who is majoring guitar in music school.

Lastly, debuting outside of Korea using their international popularity. Kara’s Goo Hara debuted as an actress in “UraKara” in Japan and then recently kicked off her acting career in Korea in SBS’s “City Hunter”. Super Junior’s Donghae will debut in acting with a lead role in Taiwan through “Glamorous Challenge”, set to start sometime this year. MBC’s “Playful Kiss” in which Kim Hyun Joong was featured in had very low ratings in Korea, but it went on out to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many other countries to gross a total of approximately 4 million dollars.

On cable channel MBC Every1 ‘Magazine One’ aired on the 20th, JYJ’s Park Yoochun was named as an idol artist with excellent acting skills.

The show introduced Park Yoochun as a star with acknowledged acting skills and viewers rating success on debut piece ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal. The dialogue explained, “Yoochun played the drama character 200% with emotional acting that captured ladies’ hearts.”

Thank you so much, ” said Park Yoochun on the set of  ‘Miss Ripley.’ He added, “I still have a long way to go, but I hope you understand that I’m trying my best.

Miss Ripley’s Production Company Says, “We Are Curious As To Why Park Yoochun Can’t Appear On Variety Programs”

JYJ have once more been swept up in an external pressure controversy. On the 17th, the press conference for MBC’s ‘Miss Ripley’, the drama in which Park Yoochun plays a leading role, was held yet reporters from MBC’s entertainment news program ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ were not seen, sparking alight the pre-existing rumor that SM Entertainment, JYJ’s former agency, is applying external pressure on the MBC variety program sector. This rumor had already escalated when it was found that Park Yoochun was scheduled to appear on MBC’s ‘Come to Play’ and KBS’ ‘On a Roll’, only to have his appearances cancelled.

In a phone conversation with 10Asia, a representative of ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ stated, “We have a system and criteria set for such news coverage. If there are better items to cover, we do not have to send reporters to a location for the sole reason that the drama is one being aired by our broadcasting company. Recently, we aired a segment focusing on Lee Da Hae of ‘Miss Ripley’, so we decided to exclude the press conference from the list as it overlapped.

However, ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ has attended the press conferences of all MBC miniseries with the exception of ‘Matched Pair’. But ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ focused heavily on ‘Matched Pair’ after the press conference by visiting the filming location of the drama frequently and holding a separate interview with the child actors. The lack of coverage of ‘Miss Ripley’ by MBC has left the production company of the drama with many questions left unanswered.

The production company of ‘Miss Ripley’ stated, “We had no problem adding Park Yoochun to the cast of the drama. We, too, are curious as to why Park Yoochun can’t appear on variety programs.

The rumors of external pressure are also circulating around KBS. KBS recently responded to a viewer who wrote a post in the Viewer’s Thread titled, ‘Please explain why JYJ can’t appear on KBS shows’. According to the response, “As JYJ’s lawsuit with their former agency has not yet ended, KBS is awaiting the results of the lawsuit with the most objective position as possible. The televised appearance of a celebrity locked in a legal dispute, such as a lawsuit, usually has an impact on the controversy that surrounds them. So it is a normal procedure to await the outcome of the situation and to refrain from allowing the celebrity to appear on TV.”
Though the Courts laid down the verdict that JYJ are allowed to temporarily pursue independent activities in the entertainment industry until the final verdict of the lawsuit between the group and SM Entertainment, KBS cannot allow them to appear on their programs as they are currently active under a dual-contract. KBS added that JYJ would not be able to appear on KBS’ programs until the end of the legal dispute.

CEO Baek Chang Joo of C-JeS Entertainment, currently in charge of managing JYJ, has already released an official statement refuting that of KBS.

But Park Yoochun has already appeared on KBS’ ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ and JYJ sang that KBS’ ‘Acting Awards’. Therefore, people can’t help but question why JYJ are able to appear on all programs excluding variety shows. Even if the public were to accept KBS’ stance, there is no equity in the notion that the standards of appearing in a variety show and the standards of appearing in a drama are different.

On the other hand, ‘Section TV Entertainment News’ stated, “If ‘Miss Ripley’ becomes very popular, we will become the ones to ask for coverage of their drama.” This means that the success of ‘Miss Ripley’, as well as the response from the MBC variety program sector, may be what will confirm or deny the rumors of external pressure. Will JYJ be able to appear on variety programs?

110518 Park Yoochun : “Wealthy Man” Image? Actually I live a really simple life…

Actor Park Yoochun (26), who has been playing  “wealthy man” roles ever since he started acting is actually the opposite, and actually enjoys a simple life.

In the drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” Park Yoochun played the role of Lee Seon Joon,  a high-ranking official’s son, and in his upcoming project “Miss Ripley,” he will act as the role of heir to local top-class resorts, the character Yutaka, with his decisive abilities and drive, lighting up the screens once again as the perfect man with leadership qualities.

Park Yoochun, who started out as a singer had already caught the attention of many with his “luxurious” image. In addition to this, the roles that he has played in dramas after becoming an actor have both been characters from a wealthy background, born with a silver spoon in their mouths, reinforcing his image as a “wealthy man.”

With regards to this, Park Yoochun said, “Unlike the characters that I play in the dramas, I am actually a very simple man. I don’t really like going to expensive restaurants, and I wouldn’t go there unless there was a special reason. I go once every two years, when my mother wants to go.”

(Omitted)

For this project, Park Yoochun does not need to worry about criticism about his acting skills, and as long as the viewership ratings are satisfactory, he will be able to establish a firm position on the small screens.

In his previous work, “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” not only did his role as Lee Seon Joon, together with Park Min Young, Yu Ah In and Song Joong Ki create a “Jjalgeum Quartet” fever,  but during the “2010 KBS Drama Awards,” he also managed to win three awards including the Best Newcomer Award, gaining recognition for his acting.

To this, Park Yoochun said, “However, I still feel a lot of pressure, so it was not easy to pick my next project. This is because there were too many people giving me high appraisals for my previous project.” Also, “From a learning viewpoint, every time I do something, there are many concerns such as ‘How much can I learn.’ After deciding on this project, I have been constantly worried about whether I can do a good job.”

Following that, he said, “But once I started shooting, the seniors took good care of me, so the acting turned out smoother than expected. When I think about the fact that other actors would have concerns about picking their next role, I feel a little better inside,” speaking candidly about his feelings.

Also, with regards to this role, “Everyone may feel like the character I play feels like the role of a “hidden prince.”  Personally, I too, feel that this character has a lot of charm, but is not one-dimensional.  I’m constantly communicating with the director about how to express the role, and always thinking. Actually, they are just little details, but I wish to use facial expressions and looks, together with the communication of the lines to eliminate the impression being one-dimensional,” he said, showing his deep consideration.

Moreover, “In the drama, the way Song Yoo Hyun expresses his pain is different from Lee Seon Joon in “Sungkyunkwan Scandal.” He is a character who faces people with a smile on his face first. Although both roles are that of a “wealthy” son,  but his cheerful image is the main difference,” he added, creating more anticipation for this different sort of charm.

When acting in his previous drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” the later part of the filming process overlapped with the dates for JYJ’s Worldwide Showcase, and because of this, Park Yoochun had to endure an intense filming schedule. This time, the shooting schedule runs simultaneously with JYJ’s America Concert Tour, and (he) is unable to escape from this busy lifestyle.

Truthfully, the first episode airs on 30 May, and filming is already underway, and the group JYJ will be kicking off their America Tour Concert Tour on 20 May.

Park Yoochun said, “The schedule was is really tight, and there is no time to manage my personal health issues. I’m busy studying the script and can’t be thinking of other matters. But because I’m concentrating on things that I want to do, so I don’t find it tough. Even though shooting has led to a lack of sleep, but it’s still very interesting,” showing his passion for acting.

Park Yoochun plays the role of a Japanese in the drama, and needs to speak more Japanese than others. Due to the long period of time spent doing activities in Japan, his Japanese speaking skills have reached that of a native speaker’s standard, and the production crew has complete faith in him.

Park Yoochun said, “Speaking Japanese itself is not difficult. However,  when speaking Japanese, my actual tone of voice shows, so I was worried. I haven’t used Japanese in my acting, and the most difficult part of it is the difference in tone.”

Also, “Miss Ripley” is a drama based on the case of the forged resume that rocked the country, the “Shin Jeon Ah incident”, and the title “Ripley” signifies a woman who decides on her own fate. In the drama, Park Yoochun will be showing the side of a romantic man, who is willing to risk everything to stand by the side of the woman he loves, Jang Miri (played by Lee Da Hae)
