110905 SM CEO Kim Young Min Says, “What TVXQ Did As Five Was Extraordinary”

SM Entertainment’s CEO Kim Young Min highly praised the achievements TVXQ made as five members.

CEO Kim met with domestic reporters in Tokyo, Japan on the 3rd for ‘SM TOWN LIVE in TOKYO’ and while explaining the role and importance SM has in the Hallyu Wave, he said, “We are neither representatives who have been selected and recognized by the country nor representatives of K-POP. Though we do feel a sense of responsibility, I don’t feel that we should speak for K-POP or the nation as a whole,” and “But SM places importance on whether or not we can be number one in a cultural aspect. To SM, whether or not our stars can be number one or not is extremely important.“

Talking about TVXQ, CEO Kim indirectly explained the role and importance of SM as he said, “TVXQ’s power is astronomical. What the five members did together was extraordinary. So regardless of the incident (of the three members leaving), the group was able to come to its current position. TVXQ’s power played the role of opening the road ahead for their juniors. What’s more important than being number one is whether or not we can create contents that have the most power in the market.”

Regarding SNS, which has helped the Hallyu Wave spread throughout the world, CEO Kim stated, “SNS has contributed a great deal to the Hallyu Wave. We’ve benefitted from it as well. But within it lies a sacrifice that stems from illegality. Though we’ve been able to expand our influence geographically, I believe that the mindset that SNS marketing is a powerful tool is wrong. Though it is useful, it could cause the downfall of the music industry. What could we do when IDs are shared on the Cloud service? SNS is a useful marketing tool, but it isn’t a necessity.“

Talking about SM’s future plans, CEO Kim stated that SM plans follow the natural flow of the market as he said, “We will follow the market. We’ve set up a steady foundation in Japan, and China is a market I’d like to see us expand into. K-POP has been going on for ten yeas here, starting with BoA. I can’t speak for K-POP’s current location or identity. But according to Japan’s Tsutaya (Japan’s biggest album and publications rental shop), Hallyu-related products have recorded the highest sales so far, beating every other type of contents. Hallyu-related products are now being rented out more frequently than American movies.”

‘SM TOWN LIVE in TOKYO’, which was held at Tokyo Dome from the 2nd till the 4th, featured SM artistes such as Kangta, Kim Min Jong, BoA, TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, SHINee and f(x), bringing in 50,000 spectators each show for a total of 150,000.

110817 “There’s A Possibility That TVXQ Will Come Back As Five Next Year?” Says The Japanese Media

An article stating that there is a possibility that TVXQ will come back as five has surfaced in Japan. Though it doesn’t base itself on accurate facts, the article is garnering much attention from Japanese fans as TVXQ are extremely popular in the country.

The Japanese weekly magazine ‘Shukan Post’ recently incorporated an article of the celebrity gossip magazine ‘Women 7′ to report that, “There are movements that lead to a comeback by TVXQ as five next year in Korea.”

The magazine stated that Kim Jaejoong’s tweet on the 26th of July that said, ” I don’t know if I can say this or not.. but I miss Yunho and Changmin too..” adds weight to the possibility that the five will get back together again.

The article gave the analysis that though the members have split into a duo and a trio since halting all activities as five last April, there has been and always will be a possibility that they can get back together because the friendship amongst the members still exists.

They then continued their stance that the five could come back as five, using the words of a journalist residing in Korea as evidence. This journalist stated,“Actually, there have been rumors emerging that TVXQ will make a comeback as five next year in Korea. I believe that the K-POP boom that TVXQ helped grow will now help TVXQ get back together again as five.”

The article gained much interest from Japanese fans as soon as it was released and was ranked the most read article on the 17th on Shukan Post’s website.

However, it unfortunately seems that there isn’t much of a possibility that TVXQ will get back together again soon.

Emphasizing that this wasn’t an official statement, TVXQ’s agency SM Town stated, “We are left speechless and unable to give an answer to this article as it merely deals with the rumor that TVXQ will get back together again with no true facts to use as evidence. Also, as we are currently locked in a lawsuit, we are not in the position to say anything about TVXQ’s reunification,” and “We were surprised to see that such rumors of reunification have come out in Japan when there hasn’t been a single rumor like it in Korea.“

Sexual overtones, lack of diversity among challenges to overcome

Since the Korean pop music idol group’ concerts in June in Paris, the K-pop industry is leading a second Korean Wave around the globe. This is the last installment of the two-part series of articles looks at the bright and dark sides of K-pop, respectively. ― Ed.

The K-pop boom and the popularity of Korean idols are often attributed to Korean entertainment agencies’ tough training that nurtures talented aspirants and turns them into global idol stars.

However, what one person might see as “passion and devotion” for practicing singing and dancing for long hours every day can be viewed by another as “exploitation” of young aspirants by management agencies.

As more K-pop idol groups perform overseas and become exposed to the international entertainment business, hidden sides of the K-pop in terms of harsh labor conditions will surface, one critic said.

“When they (Korean idols) go overseas, the first thing they will see is the different perspectives on their work. Those considered as a typical practices in Korea are not really typical practices overseas. If your contract says you’ll work only eight hours a day, you don’t work longer than that overseas,” pop music critic Cha Woo-jin said.

“In Korea, part-timers in the entertainment industry work as if they were ‘volunteering.’ They often travel to remote areas and stay the night frequently without extra pay. But in advanced countries, employers’ contracts with part-timers are strictly adhered to. Otherwise, employers can be sued and fined.”

The tight performance schedule of Girls’ Generation in June led many fans of the girl group and Internet users to wonder how the group managed to cope.

According to the official schedule disclosed on the group’s website, Girls’ Generation’s concerts and entertainment activities were as follows: “MJ presents special” on June 8; “Samsung Taiwan Anniversary” on June 9; “SM Town in Paris” on June 10-11; “NHK Music Japan” on June 12; a five-day break; “Japan Arena Tour” in Tokyo on June 17-18; “MTV VMAJ Fan Meeting” in Chiba on June 25 and another “Japan Arena Tour” in Tokyo on June 28-29. The nine members of the girl group have not complained about the schedule, though.

The tight schedule for performances and events was the major cause for former TVXQ members taking legal action against S.M. Entertainment. Junsu, Yuchun and Jejung ― who later split off to form JYJ ― had claimed in a 2009 lawsuit that they were forced to perform too many shows under an excessively long 13-year contract.

An entertainment industry insider, however, asked why people think training an athlete and training a singer are different.

“Korean people don’t raise issues with tough training and long workout hours of a national sports star striving for a gold medal. Why can’t K-pop stars be regarded as the same?” said an industry insider who requested anonymity.

“The hard and tough training system is the driving force of the K-pop boom.”

Sexualizing K-pop teens is another frequently raised issue.

Kim Su-a said in her book “Idol: Culture Report on Idols from H.O.T. to Girls’ Generation,” that Korean male fans of girl groups call themselves “samchon fan” (uncle fan) to justify sexualizing teen idols.

“Setting a family-like relationship with the idols effectively blocks criticism that they love them because they want to actually touch and hold them,” the writer said.

Will Cote, a 28-year-old lecturer at Sungkyul University, raised issues with what the expatriate called the “superficial appearances and robotic dances” of the K-pop idol groups.

“Why I’m not interested in K-pop? I don’t like the sexual overtones in it. I don’t like the dancing,” Cote said.

“To me, it sounds all the same and pretty superficial.”

He added that K-pop bands seemed to have been created by entertainment agencies to make money and that they only appeal to teenage groups.

“I’d rather call trot music more Korean. It’s old-fashioned but I like music to have deeper meanings to it,” he said.

Lack of diversity in terms of musical genre is another challenge that K-pop needs to overcome, experts say. When people refer to K-pop, the music of indie bands, folk singers and rock groups is still excluded from the discussion.

Although there were some bands holding a showcase in Japan or in Southeast Asia recently, the proportion of such rock bands is only a fraction of K-pop idol groups who have a strong impact and presence in the global market.

On the Gaon Chart, the national Korean pop chart, almost half of the top 100 songs in July were by idol groups. The rest were either cover versions featured in the MBC reality show “I Am a Singer” or songs co-produced by hosts of the MBC program “Infinite Challenge.”

In terms of indie or rock music, only three songs by indie band 10 cm were on the list but that was because the group was featured in the MBC program “Infinite Challenge.”

110819 Lee Suman Models for Securities Firm Despite His Criminal Record of Large-Scale Securities Fraud

In 2004, Siphoned Off Company Funds in a Recapitalization – “Guilty” Verdict

KB Says: “No Problem… A Few JYJ Fans Raised the Issue.”

It has become known that Lee Suman, who is the director of SM Entertainment and has been appointed as the advertisement model for KB Investment Securities, has a criminal record, having committed a crime relating to securities. There are remarks that point out that the fact of having appointed an individual with a conviction of securities fraud in an advertisement for a securities firm is enough to generate controversy. But the firm takes the position that there is no problem.

According to the securities industry, KB Investment Securities launched a TV advertisement starting this month that has Director Lee has the model.

In the advertisement, along with a video of the collaborative performance of SNSD, Shinee, TVXQ and such in Paris as proceeded by SM Entertainment, is a narration by Director Lee that reads: “A true investment is something that, with a long-term outlook of ten, twenty years, creates something that cannot be imagined.”

It was relayed that Director Lee received about 300,000,000 KRW (approximately 300,000 USD) as appearance fee for the advertisement, and that he plans to donate 100,000,000 KRW (approximately 100,000 USD) to Centre Culturel Coréen.

KB Investment Securities explained the background behind appointing Director Lee as its model: “The image of the securities firm that recommends a long-term investment and the image of the director of the entertainment industry that raises stars with a long-term outlook matched.”

Despite this, the past criminal history of Director Lee is enough fodder for controversy.

When in 2003 the Violent Criminals Division of the Seoul District Public Prosecutors’ Office set out to investigate the charge of Director Lee having siphoned off 1,150,000,000 KRW (approximately 1,150,000 USD) of company funds in the process of the company’s recapitalization and purchased the company’s stocks (for himself) and thus raised a profit from the difference from the market price amounting to several hundred billions of KRW (approximately several tens of millions of USD) for himself, Director Lee fled overseas.

At the time, the Prosecutor’s Office revealed that in 1998, Director Lee realized that Korea Securities Dealers Association’s regulations would be soon amended to disallow capital increase of over 100% of the owner capital and so immediately prior to the amendment he siphoned off company funds in a hurry to do a recapitalization and thus increased the capital from 50,000,000 KRW (approximately 50,000 USD) to 1,200,000,000 KRW (approximately 1,200,000 USD).

Furthermore, Lee Director playing golf in an American golf course during his flight abroad was revealed to the press and has received the criticism of the public.

In the end, Director Lee returned to Korea after one year of fleeing overseas and was prosecuted. The trial of September 2004 turned in guilty verdicts for all charges and he was sentenced two years in prison and three years of probation.

On this, the justice department revealed that, in considering that Director Lee re-deposited the siphoned-off funds back to the company account and the fact that the capital increase for the company indeed took place, the carrying-out of the sentences will be delayed.

After this, in February 25 of 2007, he got his name on the Special Pardon list for the fourth anniversary of President Noh Muhyun’s inauguration (and was pardoned), receiving the criticism of citizen organizations and the legal community as having received justice amounting to a “cotton-stuffed rod” (T/N: equivalent to the expression “slap on the wrist”).

As the above facts are becoming known, the citizens who have seen the advertisement of KB Investment Securities that Director Lee appeared in have not been able to hide their bitterness.

A citizen asked back: “That a person who has committed a securities fraud models for a securities firm—it is ridiculous. The image of someone who, despite having committed a crime, lords over all and lives well—is that the image that the securities firm wishes to pursue?”

On such criticisms, KB Investment Securities takes the position that even though they knew of Director Lee’s criminal history, there are no big problems.

An affiliate of KB Investment Securities explained: “We were cognizant of the fact of Director Lee’s related offense. However, he was pardoned long ago. And we will focus on the fact that he has drawn a European Wave of the Korean Wave and will only be exposed for a limited time until September in the firm’s image-making advertisement.”

He also added: “It seems that some JYJ fans who have complaints against SM Entertainment are raising issues with Director Lee’s past with motives that are not innocent. As the advertisement itself does not recommend investing or promote products, we feel that there are nothing that can be problematic here.”

110730 Opinions Split On KBS’ Explanation Of JYJ’s Performance Cancellation… ‘Ridiculous’ vs ‘Reasonable’

With the release of KBS’ official statement regarding the cancellation of JYJ’s performance in the Jeju 7 Natural Wonders of the World nomination program comes a split amongst netizens on whether on not the statement is reasonable.

On the 28th, the production crew of KBS’ ‘Challenge! 7 Natural Wonders of the World, This is Jeju’ made a post on the viewers’ thread of the KBS homepage with the title ‘The production crew’s stance on the cancellation of singer JYJ’s appearance’ in reply to the post made by a viewer with the title, ‘We demand an explanation for JYJ’s appearance cancellation’.

But netizens seem to be split on their opinions regarding the production crew’s statement. In comments to the statement, most netizens were seen to be against the cancellation, stating, “This isn’t how a broadcasting company should act”, “No matter what the reason is, isn’t it going too far to make a unilateral decision to cancel a performance four days before the show?” and “Groups who have a lower awareness than JYJ appeared in the show, and they were all from SM.”

On the other hand, there were some opinions supporting KBS that read, “I understand the production crew’s statement that Girls’ Generation would be more effective”, “A change in the line-up of a program is something that can happen at any time. Aren’t JYJ overreacting?” and “They need to be more precise on whether it was a decision by the broadcasting company or a decision because of external pressure.”

JYJ were scheduled to appear on the KBS special program on the 20th as the island’s honorary ambassadors but were suddenly given a unilateral notification of cancellation. In an official statement, C-JeS Entertainment stated, “We have already reported this event to the Fair Trade Commission and we will filed a lawsuit against the acts that obstruct JYJ’s independent activities.”

110729 KBS’ Explanation, Why Can’t They Just Say It Was Because Of SM!

KBS released an explanation on the 28th regarding JYJ’s Jeju performance cancellation that has been called a national disgrace. It’s called an ‘explanation’, but it’s really nothing but a pathetic excuse that makes one’s face blush in embarrassment. If this was the kind of excuse that they were planning to release, then they really didn’t need to wait a whole week to release it. If they were going to repeat a unilateral statement that doesn’t give a proper answer to the question at hand, then they didn’t really have to release an official explanation at all.

Especially, the fact that they keep emphasizing, “JYJ’s appearance was cancelled based on a judgment by the production crew,” makes the suspicion grow that it wasn’t the production crew’s judgment at all. They say that they’ve emphasized the fact that, “The decision to allow people to appear on shows is solely up to the respective PD of that program and the decision is made based on which people will be more effective for the completion of the program,” but this seems to be nothing but cliché words that make up a lame excuse. It will be hard to find someone who will agree with a statement that merely beats around the bush.

Even if they do repeat a statement over and over again, the least they could have done is touch upon the issue that JYJ’s representatives brought up. The most important issue between the JYJ and KBS Jeju controversy is the part, “The broadcasting of the program may be impossible if JYJ appear.” This seems to contradict the statement made that it is the respective PD’s right to make the decisions. This is why many of JYJ’s representatives and fans believe that SM’s influence affected the outcome.

There is a crucial element that makes KBS’ explanation lose its persuasive power. The decision to have Girls’ Generation’s appear does not explain why JYJ were pulled out. As the decision that Girls’ Generation would be more effective than JYJ is one that is subjective to the PD and therefore can be accepted, Girls’ Generation weren’t the only singers to perform on stage, only proving the existence of external pressure from SM as there was no need to remove JYJ from the program because Girls’ Generation were appearing. The whole explanation by KBS is nothing but a lame excuse that replaces the simple statement that is was SM’s doing.

Also, if someone had to be removed from the list because of time restrictions, there must have been a team of real low awareness that could have been taken out instead of JYJ. Even if KBS were put in a situation of having to choose, it was illogical for them to remove the honorary ambassadors. KBS still haven’t answered the question as it to why it had to be JYJ; as they say, silence is a confirmation.

For Girls’ Generation who stood on stage and for JYJ who couldn’t stand on stage, it was an awkward performance. Though it was a grand performance that was prepared on the fields of Jeju, it was found that the atmosphere on location was chilly. It wasn’t a stage that Girls’ Generation, though forerunners of the new Hallyu Wave they may be, was supposed to stand on as replacements. The Jeju performance, which was supposed to promote the nomination of Jeju as one of the new 7 Natural Wonders of the World, has been left as nothing but a controversy. JYJ’s representatives have revealed that they have already reported KBS Jeju to the Fair Trade Commission, meaning that the event that was supposed to be a memorable celebration became nothing but a ruined affair.

As a result of the cue sheet that was suddenly changed four days before the concert, KBS Jeju succeeded in ensuring that their program would be broadcasted, but the atmosphere in the crowd was so chilly that it was embarrassing to catch on camera. Even though Girls’ Generation’s popularity shoots to the sky, it isn’t easy to amass a large number of fans with a sudden schedule change, especially due to the geographic location of the island. Also, the attitude and actions of the broadcasting company dropped the anticipation of the performance drastically.

Whether it was because of SM’s external pressure, or whether it was because of the production PD’s individual decision, all that matters is that the event did not live up to what it had strived to do. Though these unreasonable actions may work in the backyard of the entertainment industry, they aren’t enough to convince the public. This is the reason why the voice of criticism isn’t coming just from fans of JYJ. If KBS or SM believe that the movement against them in this issue is merely that of a fandom, then they are sorely mistaken. Before KBS explains for makes excuses, they must understand the popular sentiment that lies behind the JYJ issue.

on 27 July at 4pm, Kim Jaejoong appeared in the SBS Power FM broadcast of “Kim Chang Ryul’s Old School.” This was a broadcast which was done with a “live viewing,” and is the first broadcast program after the SM Entertainment lawsuit broke out.

As the surprise guest, Kim Jaejoong appeared for about 10 minutes, sharing more about SBS’s “Protect the Boss.” Because of Kim Jaejoong’s appearance, the netizens’ real time messages and questions increased massively, a passionate response.

On July 20th, journalist Kim Bum Tae covered the controversy surrounding JYJ and KBS on Radio 21’s ‘Lee Ki Ho’s Polyscope‘.

The segment began with an interview of Kim, who has been reporting on JYJ’s case for some time now.  Kim stated, “For the ‘N7W‘, JYJ has sung logo songs and created self-produced videos to bring in votes from both Korea and overseas.  Not even a day after these were released, the boys brought in hundreds of thousands of views.  Jeju Island was in desperate need of international votes compared to the cities it was competing against, and through JYJ’s promotions, the island was able to garner the attention it needed.  Under the suggestion of JYJ, both Korean and international fans voted for Jeju Island, bringing in effective help.”

Kim continued, “Fans are currently lodging complaints that they and JYJ’s popularity were used to bring in votes for Jeju Island.  Not only KBS, but the entire Korean broadcast industry has become a laughing stock because of this one cancellation.”

On KBS claiming that SNSD and f(x) were more effective, Kim stated, “The decision on bringing in certain artists is at the sole discretion of the broadcast network and the producer.  Still, logically, there is a ‘limit’ that shouldn’t be crossed.  To tell the singers that worked as honorary ambassadors that their appearance has been canceled randomly one day is not just tyranny but akin to violence.”

The reporter was then asked what ‘So Tam Je Shil’ was, a new word that was created regarding the entire issue.  Kim explained, “It stands for, ‘desiring SNSD and losing JYJ.’  Blind to the immediate profits, they lost what was more important and immaturely broke their loyalty.”

On SM Entertainment artists always being added in the place of JYJ, the reporter bravely mentioned that rumors of ‘external pressure’ was circulating within the broadcast industry.

Kim also asked fans to take a bigger interest in such issues by explaining, “Broadcast networks will be more heated in ‘catering to the stars’.  There’s a possibility that the influence of the label will rise, and broadcast networks will have to cater to that influence.  More than anything, the public and political circles need to take an interest to eradicate such unfair actions in the industry.”

Closing his segment, the reporter said, “I am not defending JYJ or pleading in their defense.  What I’m saying is that we need to take a listen to the voices of those that are being sacrificed under unjust practices in unjust environments, whether they’re celebrities or laborers.”

The reporter went on to introduce a tweet that a foreign fan had said, “It’s upsetting that Korean broadcast networks still don’t have an open heart.  Do they not know that JYJ’s activities are all for the benefit of Korea?” He responded to the tweet by warmly replying, “There are more people quietly resisting, supporting, watching over, and supporting JYJ than what they know, see, and hear.”

JYJ is currently preparing for a new album release as well as another tour in the second half of 2011.  The department head of Prain, Lee Jae Eun, revealed, “They’re a worldwide group with a large scale, so we’re looking at the overall picture for the second half.  It hasn’t been that long since they completed their world tour so we were going to have a moment of rest, but there are a lot of love calls from Europe and the Americas being received.  As such, we will be going straight back into preparations.”

110721 Senator Kim Jae Yoon condemns KBS, calls for clarification + apology

On July 21st, the controversy surrounding KBS’s cancellation of JYJ’s broadcast appearance was addressed by Senator Kim Jae Yoon from the Jeju Island parliament, and an apology from KBS was demanded.

Senator Kim Jae Yoon stated, “JYJ were scheduled to appear on a special broadcast on the 20th, yet was suddenly cancelled 4 days before the event, causing Hallyu fans to voice their statements and bringing such international embarrassment.”

He continued, “The media has raised speculation of external pressures. The situation became more controversial as groups from JYJ’s former entertainment company, whom JYJ are on trial with, replaced JYJ.”

Furthermore, he stated, “KBS formally announced that the reason is because of popularity [ie. SNSD and f(x) are more popular than JYJ] but they deserve criticism for not having ‘clear criteria’ for their broadcasts and going against the promise they made to citizens.”

KBS explains reasons behind the cancellation of JYJ’s appearance on ‘N7W’

KBS representatives recently explained the official reason behind the sudden cancellation of JYJ’s appearance on KBS’s ‘Jeju 7 New Wonders of World KBS Special Live‘ that left JYJ and its many fans upset and confused.

KBS officials told Sports  Korea, “Until the 3 members of JYJ finish their lawsuit with SM Entertainment, it will be difficult to appear on KBS.”

JYJ had planned to sing two songs on the stage, but on July 17th JYJ’s agency, C-JeS received notification that their appearance was canceled just 4 days before their scheduled performance.  C-JeS also received notification that, “If JYJ makes an appearance, the broadcast itself is impossible“, raising concerns of the possibility of ‘backdoor pressure‘.

However, the representative stated, “The personal activities of the members of JYJ are possible. For example, Park Yoochun’s appearance on KBS’s ‘Sugkyunkwan Scandal‘ happened.”  But past events still point to the fact that KBS has also obstructed their personal activities.

For example, Park Yoochun was invited as the ‘unknown guest star’ by actor Kim Kap Soo on KBS’s ‘Kim Seung Woo is Doing Just Fine‘ due to their close relationship on ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’.  However, one day before the recording, it was reported there was a misfire.  As a result, Yoochun was not allowed to appear on the program.

A representative explained, “That day Park Yoochun was not alone, because it was more for publicity for JYJ.” Another representative told Sports Korea, “Park Yoochun was invited by his co-star in ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, Kim Kap Soo. There was no reason for JYJ to appear.”

Meanwhile, on July 19th, JYJ fans began a signature campaign asking for both an apology and clear explanation for the cancellation of JYJ’s appearance.

110718 JYJ Members Expressed Their Feelings With Regards To Performance’s Cancellation‏

JYJ members revealed their feeling with regards to cancellation of their performance in KBS “Wish for 7 Wonders – KBS Special 5 Live”. Representative company CJeS Entertainment stated that Jeju’s honorary ambassador JYJ was slated to perform 2 songs at the “Wish for 7 Wonders – KBS Special 5 Live” and to go through the ambassador appointment ceremony on the 20th, but they received the broadcast cancellation notice on the 16th.

JYJ Kim Jaejoong tweeted on the 16th with, “If there are going to be obstacles blocking us from promoting our nation’s natural wonder, then this time, I’ll just promote it alone (like this).” He tweeted again on the wee hours of the morning on 18th with, “I don’t believe that the 7 Natural Wonders of the World Declaration Committee chooses beautiful locations in the world as a means of publicity for the profit and losses of a specific nation. Finding beautiful things in the world is a “happiness” that everyone in the world shares. Wouldn’t the purpose of choosing these natural wonders be to preserve them for a long time? CJeS Entertainment stated through their homepage that JYJ was supposed to be appointed as ambassadors through the Special broadcast but with Jeju’s local government proceeding with the promotional activities, they (CJeS) officially announced their stance that “In this situation where there are no negotiations with the artistes and performance was one-sidedly canceled just four days before, we will file a complaint to Korea Fair Trade Commission.” CJeS Entertainment has yet to hear any response from Jeju’s local government or KBS Jeju.

On the other hand, KBS had ever stated in their homepage’s message board regarding JYJ’s unability to perform on KBS Music Bank that it is due to the on-going lawsuit between JYJ and ex-company SM Entertainment and yet contracted with current representative company. They also stated, “The continuation of allowing JYJ to perform would cause legal problems and damage the cultural development and order. Until the judgment between JYJ and their company is passed or a mutual agreement is agreed upon, broadcasting activities will be stopped as what was stated before and would be further discussed depending on the judgment.” They further explained that, “The stance before the judgment of invalidity of the contract was a mistake in our management.”

110718 Has JYJ Became The Symbol Of Injustice?‏

Before the commence of JYJ’s topic, there are a few preconditional claims that have to be announced. This is because although the topic that I want to discuss starts with JYJ but the gist of the whole topic is not just about JYJ.

(JaeTime’s T/N: It meant that the discussion and thoughts from the commotion with regards to Korean entertainment agencies and unfair law judgment through the regrouping of JYJ and the lawsuit dispute.)

Preconditional Claim 1: JYJ are idols

JYJ is a new group formed comprising of TVXQ’s Xiah Junsu, Micky Yoochun and Hero Jaejoong, who left the group. TVXQ has attained the highest spot in the idol industry. This is a status achieved by all members of TVXQ and as an idol, they have their significance and their appearance would meant a significant meaning. Of course at the same time where they have their group of loyal fans, anti-fans would be present as well. 

Therefore upon any appearance of JYJ-relevant topics, the personal judgement of the issue, fans’ and bystanders’ views have to be clearly differentiated. I do not want to simply discuss about JYJ but to direct at the things happening right now and to talk about my views. Therefore before the beginning of discussion of this issue, We have to understand the slight bias that is present in the term ‘idol’.

Preconditional Claim 2: JYJ are wealthy

JYJ have accumulated lots of wealth. This can be known from the assets that were pronounced in news articles. But the main point of the problem is the unfair contract lawsuit between them and SM. Many people think that given the enormous wealth that JYJ had gotten yet the decision to sue the company was nothing different from being a ungrateful betrayer, with the lack of appreciation towards the company’s initial training for them and instead sarcastically said that themselves are slaves. Whether the truth to this is such, I am not in the position to say anything. But this issue is simple, whether their contract is justifiable or not, the court has its judgment. How much has the trio earned as members of TVXQ, there is no way to certify it now. Stealing 50 thousand away from 100 thousand is the same nature as stealing 50 thousand from 1 million. Because to someone who have earned 1 million, losing that 50 thousand, he would still feel unease.

Thus with these two preconditional claims, no matter they are wealthy people or betrayers, there are no basis. “How will the law be judging it?” This is the most important. Therefore before any conclusion is out, there should not be any clear judgment passed on them. Be it from ethical or law point of view, there are a lot of injustice towards the current JYJ. The weirdest that happened in JYJ’s activities was the unability to appear in news articles, television dramas and not able to participate in variety programmes, in addition to the frequent “sudden cancellation without a reason” incidents. The trio of JYJ recorded QTV’s programme in 24 hours and in the end this programme was unable to be broadcasted by QTV itself. Park Yoochun, who was supposed to attend KBS’s Win Win was canceled, together with this time’s “sudden cancellation” of Jeju island promotional performance even though the receipt of the cue sheet.

Not only such, on normal circumstances when a new drama is due to be broadcasted, the cast of the drama would appear in many variety shows for promotional purposes. But in ‘Miss Ripley’ situation, there are no interview of production company’s press conference from the start, and no appearance of the cast appearing on variety shows such as ‘Come To Play’.

Appearing in drama and news but nowhere to be seen in the entertainment circle, this is obviously an incomprehensible issue. Of course there would be such a situation where fans would express that it is the doing of a certain agency preventing the broadcast, but as the “agency” did not reveal anything, there would not be thoughts of accusations or suspect of the certain agency.

On the contrary, I think the problem lies with the broadcasting company. Because the television company or the news agency would invite guests to make their programmes more interesting. As for drama, the cast’s participation in variety shows would definitely allow the drama to be sold overseas with a higher price.

But the situation of Jeju’s promotional performance is completely different. With them being appointed as ambassadors, they have greatly influenced the promotional effects but was yet omitted in performance. The sudden cancellation was incomprehensible, especially when the schedule was already confirmed. There are lots of overseas fans who have planned to fly over to Korea for this public performance and this has worsen the problem. It feels so regretful especially when this happened in national-managed broadcasting company KBS.

Pre-appointed ambassadors scheduled performance was yet suddenly canceled without any special reason, this is obviously an injustice issue. Gaining the promotional effects and omitting them in the end, this shows the vile side of the establishment. This has to be brought up together with the harm inflicted to many fans. This is not what a national-managed television company should do.

The invisible backdoor pressure rumours were unbelievable. It is obvious that there is special reason and this reason have caused the cancellation. Before any judgment by the court is passed, there should not be any obstruction to their entertainment activities. Korea is a lawful country. In Korea, it is unimaginable to know of power who disregard law and there are no way to confirm if such power existed. If they say that there are not outside pressure, then wouldn’t it be impossible to stop the broadcasting based on one’s effort?

Therefore I hoped that KBS television company will give a proper explanation to this sudden cancellation of JYJ’s broadcasting. What is the exact reason for canceling JYJ’s broadcast. I hoped to receive a convincible reason.

Hopefully KBS can relay to the public the message that “Republic of Korea is a lawful society and there are no injustice.” If KBS’s reason is not convincible, that would be very regretful, very pitiful. This proves that under the law of our Republic of Korea, there are still certain power existing or that KBS has to depend on certain establishment’s power to produce programmes. If it is really so, then undoubtedly, JYJ has bear the injustice sacrifice and they have became the symbol of injustice.

110717 KBS Jeju Says: “We Cancelled JYJ Because SNSD and F(x) Are More Effective.”

“In viewing the program as a whole, Girls Generation and F(x)’s appearances are effective.”

On the cancellation of appearance by JYJ from the Jeju 7 Wonders KBS Special Live Broadcast, KBS Jeju Broadcast Agency (hereafter “KBS Jeju”) revealed its position.

The KBS Jeju affiliate who is producing this broadcast said in the telephone conversation with MyDaily on the afternoon of the 17th relayed that due to the appearance of Girls Generation and F(x) the cancellation of JYJ’s appearance had taken place: “We were propelling the appearance of Girls Generation and F(x) from before but they fell through due to scheduling problems. But at the end of the preparation stages for the broadcast, they said that they could appear. The duty of our broadcast station from the perspective of culture is to introduce many stars to the region’s society. In viewing the program as a whole, we considered just what is effective.”

The affiliate continued: “To the side of JYJ, we respectfully revealed our apologetic position.” He explained further “The group SpringSummerFallWinter will appear as planned. But in this broadcast, aside from SpringSummerFallWinter, Girls Generation, and F(x), other artists such as popera singers are planned to appear.”

The local government of Jeju, who is one of the hosts of the event, revealed through an affiliate on the telephone: “We do not know. What kind of power or abilities would we have to procure a celebrity. It is something that KBS Jeju pursued.”

Further, they relayed that they felt they were falsely charged: “Due to this situation, there are posts of protests raining on the bulletin of Jeju’s local government. But this is not something that we have done.” In particular, Jeju worried about there being potential ill effects on the voting for Jeju as one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

Before this, JYJ’s agency C-JeS Entertainment had revealed through its official webpage on the 16th: “JYJ had been looking forward to appearing on the 20th on the special broadcast as honorary ambassadors for Jeju as a member of the 7 Wonders. But today we suddenly received the notification of cancellation. We have currently requested the precise reason for the sudden cancellation of appearance to the hosts. We ask for your understanding on our sudden announcement of cancellation to the fans who had been waiting. We will soon make an additional announcement after confirming the situation.”

“Backdoor Pressure” threatened KBS to have the entire event shut down if they air JYJ?

Earlier today, JYJ received a notice of cancellation regarding their appearance on a KBS special covering the ‘New Seven Wonders’, for which they were appointed honorary ambassadors for back in May.

Just four days away from the broadcast and with tickets for the event already bought, C-JeS Entertainment expressed their confusion and disappointment with the sudden cancellation notice through a post on their official homepage.

Recent developments have hinted at the possibility of backdoor pressure being the root cause, as a representative of JYJ’s public relations company revealed, “Our manager spoke with KBS officials and they had told him, ‘If we allow JYJ to appear on this program, the entire event will simply become impossible to hold.’”

Because of their lawsuit against SM Entertainment, JYJ has been facing difficulty appearing on MBC, SBS, and KBS for some time now.  A similar case arose with Yoochun’s ‘Miss Ripley‘ coverage earlier this year, so the possibility of backdoor pressure isn’t too much of an exaggeration.

110613 “The Official Notice Regulating JYJ’s Activities Violates The Fair Trade Laws”

Congresswoman Park Seon Suk of the National Party has called for the Fair Trade Commission’s active role in investigating unjust trade acts in the entertainment industry.

At a National Assembly conference held on the 13th, Congresswoman Park brought up the topic of the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Arts Industry(KFPCAI)’s official notice that asked entertainment agencies and broadcasting companies to refrain from providing JYJ with activities. She called for an investigation to determine whether or not this official notice violates the Fair Trade Laws.

JYJ is a three-member group of Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu, all from TVXQ.

Congresswoman Park Seon Suk stated, “There have only been two instances in which the FTC called for an order of rectification in the entertainment industry in the last five years,” and “Both instances involved the domestic entertainment agency SM Entertainment.“

She continued to state, “It is not that I doubt the competitive edge that the Hallyu Wave has as it has even spread past Asia into Europe, but I believe that if the industry continues to be made of certain entertainment agencies using their superior position to take dominance over others, then the it will not last long.“

Congresswoman Park also stressed, “I ask that (the strengthening of the binding power of) the FTC’s model exclusive contract for the entertainment industry be examined as a legislation.” To this, Chairman Kim Dong Su stated, “It will be done.”

TVXQ wasn’t spared from a crazy schedule

Former 5-man group, TVXQ and their grueling schedule has caught attention. This after initially alarming fans from SNSD’s crazy schedule, which was revealed last week.

SNSD’s written out day to day schedule recently surfaced to the online community. The schedule proved the hard work of current sky-rocketing popularity of SNSD, showing that they barely have a moment to rest from June 8th until the end of July. Some perspectives saw their busy schedule as not a sign of popularity, but more of a health concern.

However, the spotlight has shifted back a few years as the former 5-man TVXQ’s schedule recently appeared online as well.

The schedule plotted out TVXQ’s errands for a year, from July 2008 to July 2009, excluding but not limited to: magazine photo shoots, studio recording sessions, movie filming, DVD filming, cover photo shoots, and CF shoots.

With that said, netizens were shocked to see that the schedule had the 5 members entering and departing the country almost as often as normal people have mealtimes and pulling multiple gigs a day with barely a day to rest throughout the year.
