110516 Kim Junsu Says, “Mozart! Is More Than Just A Musical To Me”

-Why did you choose to appear in ‘Mozart!’ despite your busy schedule?
‘Mozart!’ is a production that I hold so dear to me. It opened my eyes to the charm of the musical genre and it’s a musical that gives me great strength. When I was worn out, it helped me face the world again. So I always told myself that I would take up any chance to sing in ‘Mozart!’ again. When I heard that there were going to be ‘Mozart!’ performances this year, I pestered my agency into letting me join. (laughter) I wanted to do this because it’s ‘Mozart!’

-What is the unique charm of ‘Mozart!’?
Most importantly, the music of ‘Mozart!’ is beautiful. The lyrics are really good too. So even when I wasn’t actually performing, I would sing songs from ‘Mozart!’. (laughter) In the song ‘Golden Star’, the baroness sings lyrics that say, ‘Break the high palace walls, go forth into the big world, find your dreams and make them come true.’ I think the lyrics give strength and comfort to the singer as well as the listener.

-What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of ‘Mozart!’?
I think of Mozart as a person who wanted to be recognized and loved by other people. Though the musical deals with the life story of a musical genius, it is also the story of someone who feels lost in the world. I think about the humane aspect of Mozart.

-Did you feel a sense of kinship with Mozart?
Something like that. Because I am a person before I am a singer, I could relate to many of the emotions that Mozart felt.

-Did you hear that the tickets for your performances were sold out very quickly?
I want to thank the people who are showing their love for my performances. To repay them for that love, I have to work harder.

-Last year, you won the Best Male Newcomer Award and Popularity Award at various musical awards ceremonies through ‘Mozart!’. How do you feel when you receive an award as a musical actor?
I’ve always been happy when I received awards as a singer, but what I felt when I received an award as the ‘musical actor Kim Junsu’ was completely different from what I had felt before. Though I felt a little bashful, I liked it. Because I had received the Best Newcomer Award as a musical actor after having performed as a singer for so long, it felt like I was starting a new beginning. (laughter)

-What is good about having previous experience as a singer?
My stage experience helps me a lot. I’m used to connecting with the audience through concerts and performances. Even when I stand on large-scale stages in musicals, I don’t feel nervous.

-Is there anything special you do to take care of your vocal chords?
I follow the basic rules. I don’t drink or smoke, and I sometimes were a mask to protect my throat.

-What were the reactions of the other JYJ members when they watched you perform?
They praised me and said, “You’re so amazing! You did really well!” I was so proud of myself. (laughter)

110511 Mozart! Director Says, “Kim Junsu Has Gone From A Musical Prodigy To A Genius”

Director Yoo Hui Sung of the musical ‘Mozart!’ didn’t hold back on his praise for JYJ member Kim Junsu.

On the 11th, the rehearsal of the musical ‘Mozart!’, which took place at the Namsan Creation Center in Seoul, was opened to the press. Kim Junsu sang the number ‘Why Do You Not Love Me’ with golden hair and a red outfit, heightening the concentration of many.

Director Yoo Hui Sung, who cast Kim Junsu as the role of Mozart for the second year, did not hold back on his praise for the singer as he said, “Last year, people called Kim Junsu a musical prodigy. Though he was trying out a musical for the first time, his speed and ability to take things in was truly astounding. His talents were and still are so amazing that musical actors have to be on their toes and watch out for him,” and “This year, he has gone from a prodigy to a genius. He is full of emotion and is able to soak in everything around him. I’m happy to be working with him.”

After giving a highlight rehearsal, Kim Junsu stated to the press that, “It’s a great honor to be able to participate in Korea’s second rendition of ‘Mozart!’. To me, ‘Mozart!’ is more than just a musical. I will work hard to make it a performance audience members can feel more familiar with.”

When asked what was different from the first round of performances, Director Yoo Hui Sung stated, “We received more love than we expected last year. We’re working hard to recreate last year’s grandeur, at least to repay those who showered us with love. We’ve fixed any lyrics or lines that were a problem in the first round,” and “We’ve changed some of the lyrics to help the flow of the overall piece. There were some things we needed to fix and we’ve corrected these errors.

‘Mozart!’ will be playing at the Seongnam Arts Center’s Opera House till July 3rd.

110512 Can Kim Jun-su draw K-pop crowds again?

All eyes on Kim during rehearsal for ‘Mozart!’ musical starting its second round

Namsan Creative Center in Yejang-dong, central Seoul, was jammed with about 200 people on Wednesday when musical “Mozart!” opened its practice room to press and fans.

Though there were no ardent fans screaming or waving placards, it was obvious by the direction the cameras were flashing in that most were there to see one particular actor, Kim Jun-su.

The JYJ K-pop group member would have easily garnered the press anyway, but his popularity has further skyrocketed since he stepped into the musical scene. He is one of the few idol star-turned-musical actors who are successful.

The musical “Mozart!” which tells the life of the legendary musician through musical genres including rock and jazz, set an impressive record by attracting more than 100,000 audience members during its first short run of about a month in Seoul last year.

All tickets were sold out and the musical took home 11 local musical awards at the end of the year. At the heart of the fever was Kim, a former member of boy band TVXQ, who drew thousands of his fans to the theater.

The 15 shows that he starred in were the ones that were completely sold out within three hours of ticket sales. Scalped tickets were sold online for as much as three million won. Tickets to his second musical, “Tears of Heaven,” in which he starred as a Korean soldier earlier this year, were all sold out as well.
Because his “ticket-power” is currently unbeatable, his guarantee fee is known to have been around 35 million won per show for the first round of “Mozart!” topping that of most veteran musical actors.

“I actually just wanted to do one musical per year. Now is a busy time for me, but I badgered my agency to let me do this because it is ‘Mozart!’ This is something much more than just a musical,” said Kim, who is also currently on a world tour with JYJ.

Kim is taking the role of Mozart again for the second round of the musical which will take place from May 24 to July 3 at Seongnam Art Center Opera House in Yatab-dong, Gyeonggi Province. Three more actors ― veteran musical actor Im Tae-gyung and up-and-coming stars Park Eun-tae and Jeon Dong-seok ― will be sharing the role.

Decked in a fancy red Mozart’s coat, Kim sang one of the musical numbers, “Why Don’t You Love Me,” in front of the press and fans on Wednesday.
His voice was rather soft without a microphone, but there was something that seemed to draw in the listeners ― perhaps the boyish coarseness in his voice and his unadorned, surprisingly quick immersion into the character.

Musical insiders and critics say that Kim’s vocal and dance skills honed during his long training period to debut as TVXQ and his experiences of performing in front of hundreds and thousands of people is paying off.
“I called him a musical prodigy during the last ‘Mozart!’ This time, I think he has reached the stage of a genius. Although he only recently started musicals, he could not be any quicker in learning it,” said Yu Hee-seong, director of the musical.

Kim said that “Mozart!” helped him make a comeback after the TVXQ scandal. Kim and two other members of TVXQ ― Park Yoo-chun, Kim Jae-joong ― filed a lawsuit against S.M. Entertainment over their 13-year contract in July 2009 and formed a new group, JYJ, together.

“It helped me come out to the world, and had me welcomed by the audience again. Looking at videos of the last show, I spotted some unsatisfying parts that I did not realize at the time. I will work hard to present a more mature and perfect performance this time,” said Kim.

EMK Musicals, the producer of the musical, expects tickets to sell out immediately, like last time. The company is opening ticket sales for shows starring Kim at 10 a.m. on May 24, an hour earlier than for other shows.

Although some point out that the Kim Jun-su craze is only temporary, as it relies on his fans, musical insiders say that it could bring positive results for the musical industry by expanding its audience base to the younger generation.

Written by Michael Kunze and music by Sylvester Levay, the musical “Mozart!” premiered at Theater An Der Wien in Vienna, Austria in 1999. Some lyrics have been changed and songs rearranged from last year’s show for the upcoming production.

The musical will run from May 24 to July 3 at Seongnam Art Center Opera House in Yatab-dong in Gyeonggi Province. Tickets range from 30,000 won to 13,000 won. For more information, call (02) 6391-6333 or visit www.musicalmozart.co.kr.

110314 ‘Musical Idols’ High Ticket Power, “Not Bad” Acting Skills

(top to bottom: Acting, Singing, Marketability, Growth Potential–Junsu is placed 1st for whole categories)

Idol craze has grown stronger in musical industry. These idols usually have strong ticket power as shown by Kim Junsu who sold out all tickets of his musical starring ‘Tears of Heaven’. There are more than 20 names of idols that have ventured into musical industry.

However, as they’ve been under gazes of many musical critics, most performances of these idol turn musical actors were not highly praised. There’s been debate of the fact that despite the unproven acting skill, these idols still get many notable roles. Therefore since the 28th last month to March 13th, Kukinews held a survey to 11 musical critics and producers to assess the skills of ‘musical idol’. The positions will be decided through 4 categories: acting, singing, marketability, and growth potential where for each category there will be 2 chosen names, at which the first rank will be graded with 3 points and the second rank gets 2 points.

Idols who are chosen in skill category are Kim Junsu, ONew, Kyuhyun, Taeyeon, and J (sorted based on ranks). Yet some respondents said, “None of them has the skill that can be evaluated,” and returning a blank paper.

Kim Junsu who swapped 1st in all areas, received particularly good marks on marketability and singing ability. ChungKang Culture Industry University Professor Jin Jeong-hoon said, “Kim Junsu has proved himself as a musical star through his role in ‘Mozart!’ and ‘Tears of Heaven’” However, “His vocal range is limited so traditional classic works will be difficult for him.” The professor further pointed out, “His vocalization is also peculiar and he lacks in ability to communicate the lyrics.”

Regarding Kim Junsu’s acting skill, Dankook University Professor Yunho-jin commented, “While there are still few lacking in some parts, but his ability to instinctively grasp the stage is remarkable,”

Kim Junsu got the vote of 6 people as an idol who shows potential to become next musical idol star. Seoul College of Arts Professor Wangyongbeom said, “He seems to have potential to be loved by public in the future as shown by the sold out performances of ‘Mozart!’ and ‘Tears of Heaven’. But he has assignment now to choose another good musical work hereafter.”

A musical producer who asked to remain anonymous, “The growth of potential depends on practice. Eventhough he/she is an idol singing star, but if he/she’s failed to practice in musical basis, it would be the beginning of a cloudy performances of him/her. But the main problem of these idols are, they have their main work to focus on as well (that cause the lack of musical-base practice),”

‘Musical idol’ is undoubtedly contributing positively to the popularity of musical. This fact shown on the increase of foreign tourists from Japan, China, and more to attend musical performances.

Fans of these idols are claimed to be the source of this musical idol’s ‘ticket power’. Kim Junsu, for instance, sold out the whole of his 17 performances (26,000 seats), while ‘Legally Blonde’ starring SNSD Jessica and ‘Song of The Sun’ starring fellow member Taeyeon all at least become a break even. Therefore although their title is still a ‘rookie’, these musical idols receive at least 1.5 times higher fee than those musical veterans.

ChungKang Culture Industry University Professor Yuri said, “Sometimes musical performance appointed idols to star on their works merely to grab more and more audiences without any consideration to create a high level and good taste performances, this could dropped the quality of musical in the long term that leads to the loss of audiences at the end.”

No More Restriction, JYJ from TVXQ is Racing to be Multi-Entertainers

Despite current legal issue with their former agency SM Entertainment, JYJ finally saw green light in their entertainment activities. Yet eventhough now the restriction of them to appear in TV broadcast has gone, it still needs much time for the group to prepare for their TV performance debut. However the thirst of fans to see their idols is pretty much cured since all three members have been active in their acting career.

Last year Park Yoochun was involved in drama ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’, and thanks to the successful of the drama among various ages of audiences, he began to receive a lot of drama casts offers. Park Yoochun is currently under final review to be the lead actor of MBC new drama ‘Good Bye Miss Ripley (Good Bye Miss Lovely)’ which is in the middle of preparation and is going to air sometime in June. After finishing coordination of the shooting schedule, the drama filming is scheduled to start in April or May.

Meanwhile Kim Jaejoong is able to be seen through a home theater this year. He will act in an epic drama scheduled to broadcast in second half of the year, entitled ‘Han Ban Do’. He’s mentioned as potential cast candidate and if it’s indeed confirmed, he’s expected to act along actor Jang Dong Gun and actress Ha Ji Won.

Meanwhile Kim Junsu is established himself as a new star in musical stage. He’s been showing an enormous ticket power both in his last year’s musical ‘Mozart!’ and current ‘Tears of Heaven’. No surprise, drama production company has been eye-ing on him ever since. Although rumor of him to get drama cast has been spilled, it seems Kim Junsu will still focus on musical activities for sometime.
