TVXQ Pours Their Hearts Out On "Knee-Drop Guru"

“As a fellow member, I was a little hurt”.

TVXQ poured their hearts out on March 2nd’s episode of “Knee-Drop Guru“.

Explaining their feelings about JYJ breaking off from TVXQ, Yunho stated,”It was a shock to me at that time. I didn’t know [they] filed an injunction. My heart was broken by thinking that our big success at such a young age caused all of this“.

He added, “I was also disappointed as a member that they even took the situation as far as filing a lawsuit. I can personally handle being called a ‘traitor’ but I regretted the situation influencing my beloved and respected parents“.

Changmin revealed his feelings, saying “The situation has been written in the papers and some talked badly about my parents. My father is still a teacher so I felt bad about him getting hurt. I also felt bad at the thought that my siblings or friends would become adults holding this pain in their hearts“.

Changmin reminisced about the then 5-member TVXQ’s final performance in 2009 at NHK’s ‘Red and White Collaboration‘ saying,  ”I looked at my schedule and I didn’t see anything. We were performing at a prestigious and memorable event, and I felt sad at the thought that this could possibly be our last stage. We advanced into Japan as raw newbies and it was a great time to profit from it, I didn’t know why I was performing a sad song at such a happy and fun stage”.

Yunho said, “I felt uncomfortable singing on that stage. We had a lot of memories and we came all the way here with one shared dream and I felt afraid that our last stage could take place at one of the most prestigious awards shows. So I felt as if I sang with a sad face, I’d be acknowledging (the situation) so I sang even harder.”

In addition, he revealed the hardships he went through in preparation for the new album, “For the new album, we needed to give off the TVXQ feeling / vibe with only 2 members, so it was hard filling the empty space. We practiced until the early morning, even after all the trainees left“.

At the question “Are the lyrics to ‘Keep Your Head Down’ targeting the JYJ members?“, Yunho replied, “It literally means ‘keep your head down’. Many people are thinking that we’re dissing the members but that was not our intent at all“.

He continued, “In our 1st album, there is a song called ‘Triangle‘, which has the lyrics ‘with a falling heart (I) cry bloody tears’. If we sang that at this time, people would mistake that we’re dissing (them). If we wanted to diss them, we would’ve never came out with this song“.

On the other hand, Changmin said, “I didn’t think we’d be able to dodge many questions for long. I felt we needed a time to jump over them”, giving a reason behind their decision to appear on the show.

TVXQ also revealed the story behind their stage name.

When MC Kang Ho Dong asked, “Were you all satisfied with the team name?“, Yunho said, “I didn’t like it. Our CEO thought about it for a long time and came up with ‘Dong Bang Bul Pae’. When I first heard it, I was really shocked. After that, our names were ‘Jun Muk Go‘ (A Whale Who Lives By Eating Legends), SM5, and Dream Team“.

Additionally, the two members came on the show with the concern, “We want to have more male fans“. Changmin explained, “In Cassiopeia, only 3.25% of the fans are male”.

Kang Ho Dong thought of a quick solution and made the whole cast laugh by saying, “Go to the army. If you go to the army, you can gain the hearts of 6,000,000 soldiers“.

Official Digest for JYJ's Worldwide Concert in Seoul

JYJ's Junsu Takes on the US Next Year

JYJ's Xiah Junsu will be taking on both the Billboard Charts and Broadway next year.

Not only will he be releasing his worldwide album in the US next month, but he will also be visiting the overseas concert scene as a musical actor as he has been cast as the lead role for 'Tears of Heaven', the biggest musical created in Korea.

Seoul Company, the production company of 'Phantom of the Opera', invested 10 billion Won in this new musical which will be performed at the National Theater for a month from January 27th. The company is planning to hold overseas performances in place such as Japan and Europe after the Korean performances are over.

As the ambitious that Seoul Company's CEO Seol Do Yoon prepared to take to Broadway, it is planning on hitting the Broadway scene in 2012. World renowned composer Frank Wildhorn, who has worked on 'Jekyl and Hyde' and 'Dracula' will be in charge of the music, and Broadway's shining star Brad Little will be working alongside Xiah Junsu.

The story is set during the Vietnam War and draws its plot from the tangled love between a Vietnamese woman, a Korean soldier and an American officer. Xiah Junsu will play the role of Joon Hyung, who falls in love with Lyn, a Saigon club singer, and later returns as a famous writer to search for Tiana, the daughter he conceived with Lyn.

The decision to cast Xiah Junsu as the lead role is garnering much attention as the 'rising star' with the greatest ticket power in the industry will now meet with a large-scale musical that vows to globalize Korean musicals.

It has been found that Xiah Junsu received the highest paycheck (30 million Won per show) for his musical, beating Jo Seung Woo from 'Jekyl and Hyde' (18 million Won per show). However, this high payment was justified as he caused 15 shows of 'Mozart!' to be sold out in three hours in January, as well as the 4 'Musical Concert-Levy With Friends' performances in October.

'TVXQ Trio' JYJ's TV Appearance Falls Through.. Why?

It has been found that TVXQ's Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu (JYJ) attempted to appear on TV but it fell through in the end.

According to a representative in the Kpop industry, JYJ were nominated to perform a celebratory number at 'The 31st Blue Dragon Film Awards' that was aired on November 26th on KBS 2TV. For this, their KBS Kpop review was quickly done a week before the awards ceremony.

Usually, the review is done even before the album is released, but for JYJ, their review was done one month after their 'The Beginning' album was released in October. It has been confirmed that a total of seven songs, including JYJ's title song 'Empty', were deemed suitable for airing according to the results published on November 24th after the KBS Kpop review.

However, JYJ's appearance fell through. This seems to be because of JYJ's legal dispute with SM Entertainment. Furthermore, an extreme amount of pressure would have been placed on KBS if they had allowed JYJ to perform as pop culture-related associations are siding against JYJ, such as the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Art Industry that sent out an official document to broadcasting and cable companies, as well as music distribution companies, demanding that JYJ's activities be restricted.

However, the 'Blue Dragon Film Awards' was not the only event where this happened. Even though it is now almost two months since JYJ's album release, we still cannot hear their music on TV or the radio. This has occurred though there have been many netizens asking radio stations to turn JYJ's music on as they have yet to hear these songs anywhere though the album has been released.

One Kpop representative stated, "If JYJ does not solve their dispute with SM, they will be faced with many more obstacles in the future if they wish to continue to sing," and "There are many producers who have raised their voices stating that regulations on activities must become more strict so that something like this does not happen again."

JYJ filed an exclusive contract suspension injunction against SM last July. They began their activities by releasing their first album under the name JYJ and holding showcases, but they have not been able to stand on a TV show's stage in Korea yet.

JYJ Likely to Perform at 2010 KBS Drama Awards

Korean boy band JYJ, composed of former TVXQ members Jaejung, Yuchun and Junsu, will likely take the stage at the 2010 KBS Drama Awards, making it the first time they will perform on television since debuting as a trio.

"It's not 100% confirmed as of yet but we in currently in talks with JYJ for a congratulatory performance during the 2010 KBS Drama Awards," a high-ranking official from KBS said. "It would be great if they performed the song 'Calling You' from the drama 'SungKyunKwan Scandal' since Yuchun gave such a memorable performance in the drama."

He went onto explain that they are fine-tuning on several details including how many songs JYJ will sing at the awards ceremony.

Jaejung, Yuchun and Junsu made their debut in 2004 as part of the popular boy band TVXQ, but despite their phenomenal success in Asia, they ceased their activities as a group after being involved in a legal dispute with the Korean agency SM Entertainment.

They made a comeback to the music scene in October as a trio under the name JYJ and released their worldwide studio album "The Beginning" on October 14, kicking off their global showcase to promote their album and themselves in Seoul and the United States.

JYJ recently held two series of show titled the "JYJ Worldwide Concert in Seoul" at the Main Olympic Stadium in Jamsil last month.

For two months from late August, Yuchun had starred in KBS' 20-episode series "SungKyunKwan Scandal" alongside cast members Park Min-young, Song Joong-ki and Yoo A-in. The show fared moderately well, posting ratings in the mid-ten percent range toward the end of its run.

First Broadcast of JYJ’s Music in Korea – Explosion of Popularity Creates Interest

The new album by Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun and Kim Junsu (henceforth known as JYJ), which cannot be heard on any station previously, was aired on the special broadcast by Radio 21 last weekend, and this has caused countless download hits after the broadcast, showing an explosion of popularity.

Due to the lawsuit with SM Entertainment (henceforth known as SM), this album cannot be broadcasted normally on the radio stations so the fans can only listen and spread the word (about the album) through the Internet.

During the interview today, reporter Kim said, “All these songs were not heard on air after the album was released; not on a single station” and “listening to their music through Radio 21 was the first time that their songs were aired in Korea, hence it received a lot of attention.”

Having heard about the issue of the broadcast, Jaejoong wrote a message on his Twitter, “Thank you Radio 21″, and after hearing the news, many of JYJ’s fans flooded the Radio 21 special bulletin board to express their gratitude, leaving messages like “I see hope in Korean broadcasts!” and “Thank you!”, as well as many other messages left in Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

DBSKnights Interviews JYJ Dancer Telisha Shaw

Interview by
Rachel (MrCKDexter)
Photos by
Anthony Cabaero

Touring with JYJ in America and performing in the JYJ Worldwide Showcase in Seoul has turned dancer Telisha Shaw into an enthusiastic new Cassie.

Only two days after her return to LA, still slightly jet-lagged, Telisha agreed to a phone interview with DBSKnights. She was excited to share about her experience with Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu (whom she called "JJ, Micky and Jun"). In the past, Telisha has also danced with artists such as Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and Green Day. But her experience is not limited to dancing, her "first love". Telisha has also acted in television shows Weeds and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and in the Hollywood film Step Up 2; The Streets as Felicia.

DBSKnights: So how did you get involved with JYJ?

Telisha Shaw: I knew of an acquaintance out here in LA that I had worked with before and he randomly gave me a call and asked if I knew anyone that could choreograph for this new group that they were working with. I immediately thought of Jeri (Slaughter). Based on our friendship and his repertoire, I figured he’d be a perfect fit especially because it involved the artist dancing. ... I suggested him for the job and everything worked out. ... [JYJ's management] fell in love with him. And after Jeri came aboard, he brought me on as a dancer. ... Pretty quick process! (laughs)

As the JYJ trio were busy in Korea, Jeri Slaughter sent them footage of the choreography to learn. At the same time, the dancers started rehearsals in LA.  A few days before the New York concert on November 12th, they finally all met in a studio in New York.

Telisha: That’s when we learned the power of their work ethic. '.Cause usually when you send an artist material, 9 times out of 10 they really don’t go over it or they come in and you can tell they have no idea what’s going on. [JYJ] knew things better than we did. They were correcting us. I remember one day Jun came in and started going like, “No, that part goes here” and we were like “Are you kidding?” (laughs)

From the getgo, Telisha Shaw knew this experience would be extraordinary. "It was just like an establishment of a little family – the JYJ family. We had heard how amazing they are to work for ... but instantaneously when they walked in the room, it all set in." On November 15th, she tweeted "Thank you God/Universe...thus far this is the best gig I've ever had." DBSKnights asked her what made it one of the best gigs:

Telisha: It’s really rare that you get a total package from the artist where a) they act real in front of you, b) they’re not afraid for you to shine around them and just other variables that you really just don’t encounter.
As a whole, from top to bottom, I’ve never worked on a job where there was so much good energy. There was not one negative person or a weak link. Even when people were tired or even, you know, having one of those days where you’re just messing up, there was always this camaraderie, this support.
I’ve danced with Janet (Jackson) in the past, and in all honesty, that was a very high bar. Because of her work ethic and her just being an amazingly nice person. And surprisingly, it got topped. I never thought it would get topped and it did by this experience.

Telisha explained that before October, she didn't know anything about of K-pop and didn't realize how deeply rooted the K-pop fandom is. When the the US tour began, Telisha and the other dancers were shocked by the turnout. 'When we were in New York, we all had friends and family coming to the show and [they] were just like, “Um, the line is a couple of avenues long.” I was like, “No way, you’re exaggerating.”'

Thus followed the whirlwind tour through New York, Vegas and Los Angeles. Directly after the show at the Galen Center in LA, Telisha and the JYJ dancers hopped on a plane for Seoul. (We showered in the USC locker room and then got on the plane. I was like “Whoa, this is so rockstar!” (laughs). Then in Seoul, they began rehearsals for the two day finale on November 27th and 28th.

Telisha: On our first day, JJ lost his voice so everybody was kind of nervous about that. Everybody was getting sick cause you just get so run down. I don’t know if people understood this but the show that Jeri put on in Seoul with his team at Slaughterhouse - usually a show like that takes two months to rehearse. We had nine days to do it together. We knew some of the material just from the US shows but we had brought in additional cast members so that’s teaching them, learning the (new) material and we did all of it in nine days.

In addition to the time crunch, the production was plagued by bad weather. Although the Jamsil Olympic Stadium was covered by a canvas roof for the JYJ concert, the roof was torn and had to be taken down because of snow and hail early in the morning on the 27th. Both the performers and the fans were exposed to the elements.

Telisha: When we rehearsed outside, I had on three pairs of leggings, some tights, three shirts and a down vest. ... To go from that to literally a bustier, leggings, a small skirt and some boots (for the show) and to stand there during the intro - I was like “Oh my God!” There’s ice on the steps, there’s snow on the ground.
When we came off stage, you know, you try to find a portable heater just to warm up a little bit. It came to a point where I couldn't feel my fingers one time. But you just keep going and try to do the best show ever.

Telisha and the JYJ dancers were very impressed by the fans who attended the showcase in Seoul.“This is really fandom right here. Because the fans were like, 'I'm freezing and I'm sitting here watching this entire show.' They were definitely troopers."

DBSKnights: Was there a difference between fans in America and fans in Korea?

Telisha: No, not really. As a whole, their fans are consistent. Whether it’s two thousand or twenty thousand, you’re still going to get that intensity regardless of if it’s in America (or Korea). ... As far as the intensity, and the pride of being a Cassie, there was no difference to me. Across the board, it's a strong support system and I know [the fans] traveled and came from all walks of life. It was amazing to see.

DBSKnights: What was Thanksgiving like in Seoul?

Telisha: It was kind of unexpected. We just walked in. … It was one of those days where we were like, “Is it Thanksgiving here or back home?” We couldn’t figure it out. And finally I was like, “Oh no, it’s Thanksgiving here.” They had taken care of us, getting a turkey – I have no idea where they got this turkey from! We had a pretty nice Thanksgiving dinner.
Jun was teaching us magic tricks backstage. He’s really good with cards and sleight of hand! We were just cracking up, like, “Oh my god!” We couldn’t figure it out. (laughs)

DBSKnights: From your tweets, it sounded like Junsu hung out with the dancers more. Was that the case?

Telisha: JJ and Jun hung out with us the most. ... Micky is amazing at disappearing. Like literally, you could be in a full on conversation and see him across the room and you look again and “Where’d Micky go? Did you see Micky? Where’d he go?” (laughs) He’s so good at vanishing! It’s like he evaporates. I remember at the after party, he did it again. We were just like, “Have you seen Micky? Okay. Wow. He’s gone.”
Definitely Jun hung out with us and so did JJ. JJ was super playful, getting on the aerialist ring and goofing off. It was super funny! (laughs) ... They were just amazing people, amazing guys to work with. Really deserving of everything that they get.

One of Telisha's favorite foods is kimchi, and when the JYJ boys discovered this, they teased her. "They thought I was kidding. But no, I really love this stuff! So every time they came out, they were like, “Teli!” – which cracks me up that they call me by my nickname – and they were like “I see you! Stop eating everybody’s food!” (laughs)"

Telisha talked briefly about the JYJ boys learning English and I was struck by her great respect from them as artists. "I think it’s an extension of them communicating with their fans and having their music come across more clearly to a wider audience," she told DBSKnights. "I think it has to have been hard. … When it comes to verbalizing and expressing yourself, to not be able to – I know sometimes they were getting, you know, a little frustrated because they couldn’t express themselves. That’s what they are, they’re vocalists. But I can definitely see them learning English even better because it will give them another channel for them to reach people with their music.

DBSKnights: Any final words for the fans of JYJ?

Telisha: For JYJ fans, I want to thank them for welcoming me and being such an amazing support group for the boys. They’re really amazing people and really amazing artists to work with. I can’t wait to do it again. I can’t to see everybody’s faces again. … I’m so overwhelmed and so overjoyed by the support that they get. And I think it’s really amazing. I loved it, I really did. And I can’t wait to experience it again.

Telisha says, "I’m super geeked to be a newfound Cassie now and so excited that everybody accepted me so well!" Please welcome her at @telishashaw. This December, Telisha will be going in to the recording studio to record with Justin Timberlake's artist Free Sol. We look forward to seeing much more from you, Telisha!

Welcome to the fandom! We're happy to have you!

Radio 21 Announcement

Radio 21, which played JYJ/TVXQ songs for hours last night til this morning, and is one Jaejoong and Junsu personally thanked to earlier today through their twitter, had made an announcement on its website.

Below is translation from Japanese.
————————————-
JYJ full songs on unlimited repeat
2010-12-05 02:19:43
Soar JYJ, we will become your wings!
We will be playing JYJ full songs for the fans.
Between 2:20 am and 10am, we will officially broadcast JYJ’s music that is now unable to be played on regular broadcasting networks.
Of course, both sides have problems… there are a lot of things they ought to say to each other.
However, for SM which has a representative Mr. Lee Soo Man, who was once a singer himself, to block songs of members that it has raised itself, no matter what the reason is, we see a huge problem with such action.
As once a singer himself, he ought to know music more than anyone, so for him to behave like this, we find it very hard to comprehend. On top of that he also in a position as a senior and a parent.
As such, Radio 21 will present to you unlimited repeat of JYJ songs, that have not been able to be played officially before, until 10 o’clock in the morning.
Also from now on, we promise that as long as there are requests from listeners, we will play JYJ songs in all our programs at anytime.
Participating in this activity itself is giving power.
And we have made a new category for this. Fans please make a title for the category. … for now, we are temporarily calling it “with JYJ”.
Radio 21 has until now did our best to minimize broadcasting J-Pop.
However JYJ’s J-Pop is something to be proud of.
Sure enough we want to always present to you JYJ’s J-Pop.
Though we are inadequate, from here onwards Radio21 wants to be of assistance to help guarding everyone’s JYJ.

JYJ's Seoul Concert's Enormous Economic Ripple Effect

Attracted over 3000 fans from Japan, China etc... Creates added value of tens of billions of Won

▲Over 3000 foreigners from all over the world, such as Japan, China and the US, came to Korea to attend JYJ's concert that was held in Jamshil's Olympic Stadium

JYJ (Jaejoong-Yoochun-Junsu) showed off their strong ticket power amongst international fans and proved once more that they are the core of the Hallyu Wave.

JYJ, who released their global album 'The Beginning', held their large-scale concert 'JYJ Worldwide concert in Seoul' on the 27th and 28th at the Jamshil Olympic Stadium.

Over 3000 foreigners visited Korea from the Americas, Europe and Asia, from countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan and Malaysia, to attend the concert. Thanks to this, the domestic travel industry was set alight though November is usually considered off-season.

Before the JYJ concert happened, a technical journal in the field stated, "20,143 Japanese tourists are planning to visit Korea, the most in November, and JYJ's Korean concert, which is to be held on the 27th and 28th, greatly influenced these statistics." A representative of the tourism industry proved the group's popularity once more by stating, "Of the 4,113 tourists our company manages who are coming to Korea this month, 2500 of them are Hallyu tourists coming to attend the JYJ concert."

During the concert period, the surroundings of Jamshil Olympic Stadium were filled with fans from all over the world five hours before the concert began. It quickly turned into a global festival as fans who had flown in from countries such as Japan, China, Thailand, Philippines, USA, UK, and Germany were spotted. It was like watching an international festival as all announcements were done in Korean, Chinese and Japanese.

A tourist agency representative on location explained that, "The number of tourists visiting Korea has risen dramatically as people are flooding in to see this concert," and "JYJ proved their power as Hallyu stars and their worth as 'dutiful sons' to their nation."

He also added, "The influx of tourists is so big that it's hard to make reservations at hotels in Seoul right now," and "This concert will cause an economic ripple effect and create an added value of billions, possibly tens of billions, of Won."

JYJ's immense success has put the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Art Industry (KFPCAI) in an embarrassing situation as just over a month ago, it called for broadcasting and cable companies to refrain from allowing JYJ to appear on their shows as "JYJ's activities will have a negative impact on the Hallyu Wave".

In the official document sent on October 11th to various broadcasting companies, the KFPCAI stated, "Allowing JYJ to appear on shows will be pouring cold water onto Korea's pop culture industry and the nation's image that has been built up by the Hallyu Wave," and "JYJ will lead pop culture and the Hallyu Wave to a road of regression."

However, JYJ was able to attract tens of thousands of international fans to their showcases that were held in three US cities and six Asian cities (in Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China) and promptly proved that the KFPCAI's argument was weak with their amazing ticket power.
