■ Kim Jaejoong of ‘Protect the Boss’
Greeting domestic drama viewers for the first time as a ‘conglomerate successor’… “I want to be loved for my acting”
Idol group members who wish to change their image often say ‘I don’t want to be called an idol anymore.’ In other words, they want to escape the restricted image that an idol has. But at times, their statement can be interpreted as a denial of their origin. Therefore, Kim Jaejoong’s statement, “I want to be called an idol in the future,” was a refreshing change to the reporters’ ears.
Kim Jaejoong said, “The Japanese group SMAP have been called an idol group for the past 20 years. Being called an idol isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What’s important is what kind of idol you become.”
He added, “I don’t want to be an idol who’s handsome and great at singing and dancing, I want to be an idol who is liked by people of all age groups. Therefore, I’ve been working hard to take on the image of a ‘singer-song writer’ as I work on composing, writing lyrics and producing music.”
Kim Jaejoong has taken on a new challenge as he has been given a role in SBS’ new Wednesday-Thursday miniseries ‘Protect the Boss’. This will be the first time he’ll be taking on a Korean drama but he has already acted before in the movie ‘Postman to Heaven’ and the Japanese drama ‘Sunao Ni Narenakute’.
‘Protect the Boss’ will be the production Kim Jaejoong takes his first steps with as ‘Actor Kim Jaejoong’, not as a member of JYJ. He will be playing the role of Cha Mu Won, the ‘prince of the financial world’ and the successor to a conglomerate. Why did Kim Jaejoong choose ‘Protect the Boss’ out of all the lovecalls he’s been receiving from various productions?
“There were other productions that I felt greedy about,” began Kim Jaejoong. “But there were some productions that I couldn’t take on because they would overlap with my schedule. I received the script of ‘Protect the Boss’ just when our world tour was ending and I found it fun to read. It’s a drama with a great message too. (laughter) Though the image of a gentleman who is proficient in business is quite different from me, Cha Mu Won is a very charming character.”
Kim Jaejoong was quite cautious during the interview. At times, he would be lost in thought after receiving a question and would give honest answers with sincerity and emphasis. He confessed, “It’s been quite a while since I entered the entertainment industry. But I’m just a rookie in the acting industry. My surroundings are still unfamiliar to me so I’m being careful not to make any mistakes. I’ve done lots of interviews in the past but this is the first interview I’ve done as an ‘actor’. So I’m nervous.”
He went through a long preparation process. While Kim Junsu transformed into a musical actor and Park Yoochun acted in the dramas ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ and ‘Miss Ripley’, Kim Jaejoong prepared for his next step forward, not rushing and being sincere about his choice. When he got the question, “Didn’t you receive a great stimulus from watching Park Yoochun act?” Kim Jaejoong replied, “I was really happy to see him do well. And it made me think that I have to work hard as well. Though he didn’t have any special tips or advice, he gave great words of encouragement as he said, ‘It’s going to be rough.’”
Kim Jaejoong is currently standing between the titles of ‘top singer’ and ‘rookie actor’. Where will he be ten years from now? Kim Jaejoong smiled brightly and said, “Wouldn’t I still be a singer ten years from now?” It means that he doesn’t want to leave his hometown of being a singer. With a determined expression, he said, “There are still so many things that I want to try. I want to properly study stage directing, as well as singing and acting. There is an endless amount of things I can do as a singer. It’s a thread I never want to let go of. I’m still in the beginning stages of becoming an actor so I can’t say anything on being an actor. But I’m sure that ten years from now, you’ll still be able to see Kim Jaejoong, working hard and doing his best in a variety of fields.“
