There is a man who was an idol, is an idol and wants to stay an idol in the future. It’s quite hard to define this man with just one word. Holding the representative title as a singer, he has even taken on directing and acting.
Though he gives off the air of a ChaDoNam(Cold City Guy), he spits out a charming dialect that makes him approachable. Beneath the face that bursts into fits of laughter at even the smallest of statements lies a strong heart that isn’t afraid of challenges, and his sincere honesty that has matured through time comes through in everything he says. The name of this man is Kim Jaejoong.
◆Kim Jaejoong’s new challenge ‘Acting’… “There are no limits”
Kim Jaejoong has stood in front of a new starting line to cross the hurdles of acting. Taking on the role of ‘the prince of the financial world’ Cha Mu Won in SBS’ new Wednesday-Thursday drama ‘Protect the Boss’, Kim Jaejoong seemed nervous yet excited for his domestic drama debut.
When we talked about the fact that his senior actors praised him for his work, Kim Jaejoong’s strong and wide shoulders suddenly shrunk inwards. Asking back, “Maybe I’m about to make it big?” Kim Jaejoong soon burst out into laughter and covered his face as he did so. Saying, “I’m so grateful. I think they rephrased their hope for me to work harder than I already am in their words,” Kim Jaejoong scratched his head as if he felt embarrassed by the compliments.
Though he already has some acting experience in his pocket, this will be Kim Jaejoong’s first time acting in a domestic drama. He must be more nervous than ever since this will be the first time he’s meeting his domestic viewers through a drama. And a harsher criterion may be placed on Kim Jaejoong as he has already put forth his name and face as a singer for the past seven years.
Kim Jaejoong said, “I could never say ‘I’d like it if I got a huge amount of praise.’ I just want to give our viewers a production in which I show great chemistry with my fellow actors,” and “My biggest goal is to become someone who works in harmony with the drama, not someone who carries on the image that I’ve had till now as a singer.”
He also added, “I want to be a person who can take on any challenge and absorb everything, as the individual Kim Jaejoong and as a member of JYJ. My goal is to become a person with no limits and a group with no limits.“
◆Idol label? “I want to be an idol forever”
Any person who made his or her debut as an idol always has the ‘idol’ label on them wherever the go. Some are embarrassed by it and try to hide their idol status while others strive to evolve from an idol to an artiste. Between this two sides stands Kim Jaejoong with his own beliefs about idols.
“I like being called an idol. Wouldn’t it be more stressful if you debuted as a singer-song writer but then wanted to become an idol? (laughter) Many people have prejudiced thoughts when it comes to idols but when I see my juniors these days, there are so many of them who could succeed as solo singers. They all do so well so it I don’t think it’s right to keep them tied to a stereotyped belief based on the name or appearance of their group.“
Kim Jaejoong expressed his disappointment at the devaluation of idols as well. He confessed his truthful thoughts and said, “Idols are actually at a position where they can try out more things than the usual singer. I see it as a job that you can gain more from when you compare it to other jobs as a celebrity.”
He continued to say, “The members of JYJ are now getting into our late 20s but we’re still idols, and we’ll probably still call ourselves idols, even when we reach our 30s,” and “Aren’t the Backstreet Boys and SMAP called idols too?”
Kim Jaejoong smiles shyly one second and states his opinions concisely the next; we can’t wait for the new acting challenge of this man.
